International Premium Economy seating

Good comments, trooper.

And to make cheap Y class travel even more palatabe, I have just purchased a 1 year "Prestige" membership of Priority Pass. You'd be amazed at where they have lounges (well I was). Wish I'd had the pass years ago....

I've just completed a SYD-LHR-SYD in PE/Y+ with QF. I used points for upgrade on the outbound flight to J (16A :p) which was pretty good value for 60K. Managed also to travel with my checked bags through LHR Terminal 5 (onto Germany) in both directions which I was somewhat anxious about after hearing about the Terminal 5 disasters. The baggage system can handles up to 12,000 bags an hour, but to where??

On the return flight with PE seat 34J was allocated which is the first row of PE. The cabin was not full on the LHR-BKK leg with only the aisle seats D&G of the middle 4 seat rows filled. BKK-SYD was full.

I found the seats to be pretty comfy (compared to Y) and managed to get a better quality sleep with the added pitch and seat width plus the fact that you don't have to share an thin armrest with the other passenger. The space around the headrests and their design is pretty good making it easier to sleep without staring into the eyes of the person next to you or risk an unwanted head (and accompanying drool) on your shoulder.
I must point out that I am not in the tall category (5' 10" on a good day). The legrest extension does not allow for your legs to be fully extended due to space limitations with the way it folds under the seat on take-off and landing. Having a bulkhead seat at least allows you to straighten your legs against the wall and the magazine holder gives sufficient support for your feet. For tall PAX's the inability to fully extend your legs in this row could be annoying.

Given a choice I would take 34A (first choice), 34B or 34K for a few reasons.
  • It is easy to get in an out of the seat at the bulkhead plus no baby bassinets (only in middle of 34).
  • The aisles appear to be quite narrow and the seat is continuously being bumped by the catering trolleys. Most of the traffic is on the right hand site where the galley is located . The 4 seat middle configuration appears to stick out (see seat maps) and the crew have to manoeuvure the trolleys towards the 34J and 35J seats. Also the curtains from the galley are continuously being brushed against you in 34J and the light and noise from the galley is a pain. Eyeshades and earplugs are a must.
  • 2 windows in rows 34 and 35.
The cabin with the 2-4-2 configuration and 32 seats is light and airy and the service overall was quite good with respect to meals and the quality of the wines on offer. Touch AVOD screen is a good size (all from armrest) and same headphones as J. Offer of drinks on take-off is the same as J.

For toilets, you have to go aft to the Y toilets (I was reprimanded by a crew member when I used the J toilet to put on the PJ's - I wanted to hang up my shirt with the jacket they had taken from me and hung up with the J pax's jackets). Given that there is only 28 J seats surely the loos could be shared between J and PE.
With the addition of PE, the first rows of Y look a bit of a mess. The first row 40 in the middle (DEFG) is sandwiched between the toilets and the wall separating PE and Y. The curtain around the crew seats in 40HJK only makes it more claustraphobic.

Given the cost of PE being double that of Y, I am not sure I would take this option if it was to be paid out of my own pocket and the extra $2500 could be better used for accom and meals . I normally fly Y to Europe for work as J is not permitted and whilst the company is paying I will certainly push for Y+ in the future. The extra comfort, status credits and the smaller number of points required for a J updgrade is obviously a plus whilst it is company sponsored.

Thanks for that! Nice to hear from someone who has actually used the new product!! Sounds pretty decent to me....

..and as discussed previously (IIRC) it's interesting that you used Y+ as a stepping stone for the UG to C... (I do that to on NZ... seems to clear easier then Y>C)

And Arthur.... Good move on the lounge access.. I personally think THAT makes a huge difference... If I can have a bite to eat, a drink or twa.. sit in a comfortable QUIET place (with wi-fi!) AND (especially) have a shower say an hour before boarding a long flight (Transpac say) then I am much, much happier.. even in Y. It's probably more a personal routine/comfort zone thing... but it works for me!

Va Bene - thanks for the detailed report. I'll try to do the same after I travel on BA Y+ later this month. I'm encouraged by your comments regarding sleeping comfort - this is why I'm flying these seats- red eye Bangkok/Sydney

(I was reprimanded by a crew member when I used the J toilet to put on the PJ's - I wanted to hang up my shirt with the jacket they had taken from me and hung up with the J pax's jackets)..

Do they hand out the business class Pyjamas in Premium Y?

I looked into PE+ with QF for a trip in September 2008, I have to make, and I will be paying for it, no company payment.
QF are quoting PE+ return at $5348.00. Then 120,000 points for upgrades both ways if available. As WP and booking 90 days out would have a reasonable chance.

However I have booked and paid only $7399.00 for J [D] return, how, well a special AY are running. I fly 3 sectors on QF J, Mel-Sing-Lon. On the way home I flight Y Lon-Hel, the J from Hel-HKG on AY, then either CX or QF from HKG to Melbourne. Yes, $2000 dearer , but keep 120,000 points and assured of J for all the long sectors.

QF want $10,694 for a J [D] return.

Last year I went Sydney, Bangkok (or Sing), Helsinki return. Economy first hop, and business to Europe with Finnair/Qnatas - I think about $4,300, and not using points (still got the points for the flight) I would consider something like this with Y+ Sydney/Asia when I next go to Europe and I'm paying.

That is still an option. And you can upgrade to PE+ for a price on QF to HKG or BA to BKK. Or use up grade point on the Y .
Finnair Mixed Class to Europe

from $4519 + tax

Mix it up with Finnair!!

You can now travel economy class between Australia and Asia flying either Qantas, Cathay Pacific, British Airways, or Japan Airlines, then mix it with Finnair between Asia and Europe in Business Class via Helsinki all fr. $4519 + tax fr. $600 pp. Valid for departures to 31 Mar'09 (seasonal), speak to a Travel Expert about the different options available.

Do they hand out the business class Pyjamas in Premium Y?

No they don't hand out any PJ's in Y+. I was given them on the J upgrade outbound. Given the thickness of hte fabric for the J PJ's, if they gave them out in Y+ they would probably be made from Chux superwipe material.
I felt a bit uncomfortable heading into the Y cabin to put on the grey Morrissey PJ's emblazoned with a great big black Kangaroo in case I was lynched or called a w****r.
As it was, I turned the top inside out to hide the roo for the Y+ cabin. No free advertising from me!

Is there some etiquette in wearing F PJ's in J or J PJ's in lower cabins? I've got some BA F and QF J ones from previous trips and was considering taking them before the J upgrade came through.

The AY tips/options look attractive and I will consider this for a Sept Europe trip. This site is great for finding out these things.

I think opinion on PJs is divided - some do and some don't. Personally I always switch into them if offered. However I have yet to take them for flights where they have not in the past been offered due to Hand Luggage Only constraints. In the upcoming Big Personal Trip with a number of J flights sans PJs I think I might take some with me - especially for the 15 hours HKG-JFK on CX...

I'm the opposite. I like to travel light. Come to think of it, I now have so many sets of these PJs that I could wear them, and leave them as throw away junk on the plane. I never wear them at home, and my wife complains about them taking up a full shelf - better than just throwing them away.

As far as I'm concerned, wear whatever makes you comfortable. For males you should look decent - females I'm not too fussed.

Personally I like wearing the J pyjamas at home as they are not too thick, hence one doesn;t get too hot.

I have heard it said by forum members that they [J pyjamas] are great for polishing glass and silver!

F pyjamas and slippers are better quality although too big for me to wear!

When flying Virgin Atlantic Premium Economy, do not accept seats in row 23, as they are opposite the toilets, I didn't pay the extra fare for this type of seating, We wrote to Virgin Atlantic all we got was spin and platitudes, as my travel agent said when he saw their response " They really don't give a damn. The menue and food out of London was very poor Take or leave it.

Just returned from SYD-LHR-MEL in PE. We had registered for points upgrades to J, however all flights full, so they didn't materialise.
Generally pleased with the new product. We had 34 J/K on the way up and 34 A/B on the return, so bulkheads all the way.
  • Give 34JK a very wide berth - the galley noise/light just goes on and on, and a lot more foot traffic on that side of the cabin it seems.
  • We also got reprimanded for using the J loos and also for using the J self serve bar - although refreshments are available from this bar for PE pax, you have to ask and it is brought to your seat. Even then the FAs didn't seem to be aware that this service was available.
  • Seats are great, though the foot rest is a plastic covered bar, and not very comfortable in socked feet for long periods - bet Marc Newson hasn't tried it for 11 hours!
  • While bulkhead seats great for getting in and out of, the other seats may actually offer more leg room when legs are exended under seat in front. Interesed to hear from other members.
All in all a good product though, and would sertainly use it again - much better than standard Y.

It always worries me when FAs don't understand their product. How difficult was it to get them around to getting stuff from the bar for you?

Also, if you had never travelled in J, how would you know what was at that bar? Is there a menu card?

It clearly states on PE menu card that snacks etc are available throughout fllght.
During dinner service I asked for the cheese selection that was on menu as part of dinner. FA looked down her nose at me, like I had asked for the blood of her first-born, saying she would see what she could do. When I showed her the menu she looked totally surprised, and said she wasn't aware it was an option.
It wasn't too hard to get an FA to bring the snacks etc, however they didn't do that many walk-throughs to grab them.
I suppose like any new product it will take a bit of time to settle in - perhaps they should give a discount for those travelling in first few months.... Dream on....

The product is advertised as having a dedicated flight attendant.

[Still 1:32 or 1:40 is still a high ratio. Business has about 1:10 and 1st 1:7]

Was there indeed a dedicated flight attendant? How dedicated was the dedicated FA?

On all 4 sectors there were 2 FAs, and during meal-service they seemed to get a bit of assistance if required, so no worries on that count.
Bit hard to get wine glasses refilled during dinner though - had to keep on at them!

So they obviously weren't ex J flight attendants. I think qantas J FAs are programmed to refill glasses!

On another note, what was the quality of the meal service - ie food/beverages/quantitiy/presentation etc?

I flew Syd/Bangkok in the same seats. I agree the bulkhead is probably not the best position for leg room. I flew back today in BA prem economy red eye. For me, the extra leg room makes it worthwhile, particularly for sleeping. The seat inclination/comfort is nothing exciting. For a comparison of Qantas and BA, my impression was that BA had more leg room, but I can't be sure. Both had disappointing leg rests, but BA was better (bit unfair to compare as I was on the bulkhead for Qantas). Qantas has larger video screens, and I considered a better selection of entertainment. For meals, Qantas was ok. BA was terrible - dinner was dried out, but acceptable as basic economy airline food. Breakfast was a cardboard box with youghurt and a dried up heavy croissant.

For reasonable distance or short (9 hours) red eye, I'd do it again. For long haul, I'll probably stay with business.
