Hi

Trying to put together the procedure for my son to follow upon arriving into Dallas airport (from his Cancun/Mexico flight) and then onto a Honolulu bound flight.

It would be appreciated if somebody could advise me if the below steps correct or if some are out of order.

Upon arrival at Dallas/ Fort Worth Airport - Terminal D

  • You will have to go through Immigration.
  • Collect your checked baggage from the carousel.
  • Go through Customs.
  • At that point you will be “landside” (outside security).
  • Re-check your baggage at the nearby AA baggage re-check location. (not sure if it's a dedicated AA baggage re-check station or one that all airlines utilise)
  • Look at the flight information board to determine your Honolulu flight departure Terminal & Gate No.
  • Once you know the Terminal & Gate No for your Honolulu flight., take the escalator up one level & go back through security to get "airside".
  • Catch the airport Sky Link train to your departure Terminal and disembark at the closest point to your AA1058 departure gate. (there are 4 Sky Link stops within each Terminal, so look for a stop closest to your flight Departure gate)
  • Since you have a long layover (5 hrs), it is a good idea to re-check the Gate departure info frequently as AA do change their departure gates on fairly short notice.

Any input or corrections would be appreciated
Thanks

sounds about right to me! You might consider springing for a $50 AA lounge pass for the 5 hours wait?

DFW is fairly easy to navigate . I'm not sure that you are outside security after customs, also you do not say which airline he his flying into DFW with- he may be able to check the back from his point of origin to destination- just clearing customs and re dropping (not re checking) at DFW Agree with Mel traveller - lounge pass a great idea

For a one time visit to DFW with a 5 hour transit I'd not bother with the $50 lounge pass. The food and beverage in the lounge(s) isn't so good and there are a myriad of dining options where you could get a proper meal plus drinks for under $50. YMMV.

Sorry, I should have said he is travelling with AA from Cancun to Honolulu with stopover in Dallas, the flights are on one PNR.

Maybe my terminology is wrong when I said re-check the bags, I guess I maybe should have said re-drop.

Is anybody able to advise, when I re-drop the bags in Dallas is it at a dedicated AA drop-off point or one utilised by all carriers.

RE Lounge Pass: I don't think he would get into the QF Lounge, leaving from Cancun and being 20 yrs old I don't expect his dress code would be up to the Lounge dress code.

It's the AA lounge (one of many) - but I think you need to be 21 or over to enter unaccompanied.

I can't recall the exact situation at DFW - but if it's like other airports there should be a dedicated AA bag-drop off. Although they're all located close to each other anyway.

Just a side note, I have seen a few of these threads pop up latley, I understand this if they kids are young, but if they are 18-22 they are adults, If it was a tight connection and there first time sure offer advice but hes got a huge amount of time. Give him the basics ie. pick you bags up re-check in ect. Then let them figure it out for themself, they are obviously old enough to travel alone let them learn some life lessons!

Depends who's paying for the ticket :) If 'child' is paying themselves, this'll be the last time they miss a flight. If mommy and daddy are paying or have to provide the bail-out at 3am, less incentive.
