An international airport should be built at Newcastle with a fast train link to Sydney, national parks should be opened for commercial tourism and Sydney should be rebranded as a global tourist destination, says a scathing report on the NSW Government's handling of tourism since the 2000 Olympics....

An interesting concept. However, the civil airport is leased from Defense with the airport's primary current role as a RAAF base. Were NTL to become a major international airport the two roles would need to be rationalised.

A piece of trivia - Newcastle UK now has international flights courtesy of Emirates!!!

Emirates Airline has announced the introduction of daily direct flights between Newcastle and Dubai from 1st September 2007. The new link will be Newcastle Airport's first long-haul route.

The flights to the north east airport, Emirates' sixth UK destination, will be operated by modern Airbus A330-200 aircraft, offering 27 business class, and 251 economy class seats.

Plenty of room there in the sand hills. With the noise that the military aircraft make there would be no need for a curfew, NTL is 30 km out of town and the main problem would be the rail link from SYD to NTL airport - not insurmountable - but it needs to start now to get off the ground by 2030

It may be NCL's first long-haul international operator, but NCL has had European international flights for many years. I remember noting at least 3 international (European) operators at NCL when making BA connections in the past.
