Internatinpal to Domestic Connection: baggage has been checked through to final destination

CX has just checked me through and issued boarding passes XIY-HKGx-SYDx-BNE. I thought that I had to collect my bags in Sydney, go through customs and re-check at the Qantas Connection counter. Is this no longer the case? Thanks in advance.

Yes you will still need to collect your bags in Sydney, go through customs and re-check at the Qantas Connection counter... It doesn't matter that you've been issued with the onward boarding passes or that the bags have been tagged through.
