Just back from a 5 week trip and thought I'd share my interesting experience at Queen Alia Airport in Amman - flew the ATH - AMM - DXB legs in J with RJ.

First off, I should mention that the main news item was chemical weapons in Syria and whether Obama was going to start bombing so that may have brought on some anti-westerner sentiment - plus I was carrying a Stetson Panama hat (stops my bald spot from getting sunburnt) so I could have been mistaken for a Yank! Would also comment that both my wife and I were dressed well so certainly didn't look out-of-place or like bogans.

So, on with the story........on exiting the elevator to the Crown Lounge a well-dressed Arab looking woman (not a staff member) waiting to enter the lift stood in our way and said "This is the lounge level" as if we didn't belong there. A simple "we know" and in we walked.......heading to the lounge desk to show our BPs where we were completely ignored. As we stood there patiently the man at the desk attended several Middle Eastern-looking people (2 of whom arrived after us) and, after finishing with them, looked down at his desk as if we were invisible. Only after I shoved the BPs under his nose were we waved through without a word being uttered.

The general reaction to us from other pax was icey - several women especially openly stared at us with hostile looks. Talk about not feeling welcome - it's unsettling to look up from your iPad to be met by a gaze from a complete stranger who clearly objects to your presence!! FWIW the lounge is semi-circular with a waist-high glass balustrade overlooking the duty free area below. It is modern, very clean and well appointed - i.e outwardly inviting. The area to the left of the entry did not have any westerners so we decided on the right side which had the majority of buffet /bar selections anyway. There appeared to be only a few other western pax (men) there. So if you're a white anglo-saxon don't expect a warm welcome in the Amman Crown lounge!

Hi, thanks for this information- I will be transiting through Amman (alone) in a few weeks time (IST- AMM- DXB).

Very surprising from my research on Jordan so far, in prep for a trip there next month. But thanks for the commentary; didn't sound very nice at all.

Sheln81, would be interested to hear how you fare.

I was in Amman in July and got to say I didn't receive this treatment. We didn't use the lounge, but I was spoken to politely at all times. A word of warning, most of the food outlets only accept Visa ( so couldn't use the 28 degrees mcard). Not sure if the duty free is the same, as I didn't buy anything there. Dead Sea resorts were amazing. The baptism site is a worthwhile visit too.

Well there are obviously regional tensions now.
When we were in Jordan last year definitely different reaction.Very friendly.Though at one museum I was asked coldly if I was American, when I answered Australian the attitude changed markedly.
So probably wear something to identify you as an Aussie.

Interesting... I have a few AMM transits coming up including an overnight. I was quite looking forward to a new place.

I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. I had a transit in AMM in June and I was very impressed with the new airport and the beautiful crown lounge. I didn't find the attitude of the staff or the pax to be 'cold' because I'm western.
I will have another transit there in a couple of months and I'm curious to see if I will have a different experience this time.

Maybe wear some americana gear and just see how you go...

I tend to think i wouldn't give a toss myself about their thoughts and opinions, and if the guy wasn't smartish about looking at my boarding pass i'd walk in...

Maybe vetrade you could try complaining to RJ, maybe they can either do something about customer service training or ask them for some compensation...

Actually everything about our two RJ flights themselves was more than satisfactory casanovawa - no complaint at all about the food, service and pleasantness of FAs - so apart from the desk clerk I don't have any issue with the airline. What predominately struck us (and something we have never experienced before despite having visited many lounges) was the reaction of other passengers using the lounge (who the airline has virtually no control over).

Usually people pretty much go about their own business and ignore you in lounges because you're all strangers, but in this case we were very aware that a percentage of the other pax took an instant dislike to our presence and wanted us to know it. Since there was nothing about the way we were dressed or acting to induce their displeasure we assume that their reaction was a stereotypical hostility towards westerners in reaction to the fact that they were expecting the US to attack one of their neighbours at any time.

I'm currently sitting in the Crown Lounge waiting for my flight to Dubai (just arrived from Istanbul). When I walked in I was attended to straight away, and was informed that flights aren't called and told where to find the food/drinks.
Now to kill 3 hours....

Been there many times, transit hotel is a nice option of course too.

Best was when we played pool with 2 Saudis, killed a good hour. Yes it's a different culture and the service standards are sometimes lacking. Have been there during several neighbouring revolutions and wars. I think it is a bit simple to put it down to they think you're American and instantly dislike you as it's simple to say US attacking Syria would be universally seen as bad. In some quarters US is now seen as the main ally (pro democracy) and Russia and various local elements have become the opposition, probably since the Iranian green revolution. Jordan itself is quite stable and moderate but having some internal issues with having a 'full' democracy, in addition it has been strained for sometime with the truly massive influx of Syrian refugees. Anyway enough about the geo-politics... the new lounge is a nice improvement mostly because things had been left to fall apart with the ever delayed new terminal being built.

What is the food & drink situation like currently Sheln?

Flew out of Amman 2 days ago, and used the Crown Lounge. No issues at all.

Quite a nice lounge, but showers cost abt $15 ( I was an EK pax- not sure if that made a difference).

Plenty of food and 2 bar areas, pretty well stocked. Serve yourself wine ( Jordanian, French) and beer (Amstel). Great fresh juice bar as well ( mango, strawberry, carrot and orange).

I too received good treatment in Amman.

The lounge is indeed split in two.

Lovely small dessert plates on offer.

in Amman itself we had people come up to us on two occasions and wish us welcome to their country.
