Interesting Carry On Bag

I've been searching the net for a laptop bag for my new laptop, and came across this range - Checkpoint Friendly Laptop Bags,Backpacks,Briefcases

They call them checkpoint friendly bags because the laptop compartment completely unzips on three sides and opens out flat at 180 degrees to the rest of the bag. They say that you just need to do that and can send it through the x-ray machines like that without having to actually pull the laptop out of the bag. Does anyone know if that would fly with security at Australian airports or will they still insist on the laptop being removed from the bag at the x-ray machine?

My guess it will still have to be removed because the laptop supposed to be completely uncovered when it goes through the x-ray (in Australia).

I leave my laptop in a sleeve and they never ask me to remove it. I also have a "leave in" carry on and they always asked me to remove the laptop. What's the difference? None really, it's all perception.

The difference is the fact your carry on is likely to have other things that block the picture, a sleeve unlikely. Its a 2D image, if they had 3D scanners I dont imagine there would be any need to separate anything.

Right, even though this may not be the case as I do stuff things in my laptop sleeve from time to time. What I'm saying is that my advice to the OP is not to get too excited by this product, they will make you remove the laptop.

I have a Sampsonite with a fold open laptop compartment on a similar theme - the two times I tried to use it so, I was asked to remove the laptop anyway.

It seems to depend on the Security guards on duty at the time. I carry two laptops, domestic MEL told me to remove one of the sleeves, SYD didn't worry, but Int MEL wanted everythign out. Intersting my kindle always stays in my bag and has never been pulled up anywhere in the world.

Beware of side zippers, i had a bag with the laptop accessed by such a zipper and thought it was a great design! Always remember after clearing security in AMS and after repacking it, "threw" my backpack over my shoulder. Unfortunately i did not do the zipper up and laptop shot out about 3 metres just missing the security staff but landing in the middle of a bag search. The Dutch dont have a sense of humour!

Maybe it's something that we as a community can raise with the appropriate minister or authorities? A collective voice will have a far greater chance than just one person writing a letter, and if the Americans can do it then obviously we aren't asking for the impossible.

Almost all of my backpacks are supposedly check-point friendly. I have never been allowed to leave my laptop in the bag and just have the bag open flat in AU. Even in the US, I have had to take it out most times. I have been allowed to keep my laptop in its sleeve almost all the time.

Its quite common now in some Asian countries that the laptops are left in the bag; last trip it was Karachi, Muscat, Dhaka and Kuching. Every country seems to have its own set of rules and guidelines and in some cases it even changes from airport to airport.

I have a sleeve for added protection for my laptop and by default take it out of the sleeve for security as half want it out, and other half don't care. However find 10% ask me to leave it in the sleeve now when going through the motions to remove.

In Asia, SIN, HKG, and China, I don't worry about taking it out of the sleeve as they don't worry about it.

The whole laptop issue has the most inconsistent approach, even within the same airport and depends on the person on the day.

Not so long ago we'd have said that was a desktop!

As for the bag, mine laptop (when I bother to take it) is out and ready long before I'm told. Just makes the whole process easier. I don't want to stand there arguing about it or fumbling about holding up the queue, so I just prepare for it and as such, I have no idea how many times it would have "got through". My laptop bag opens right up just like that one, so I don't see any great innovation there.
