Instant Platinum Status possible?

After everyones input on this, I have been convinced that there is no worthwhile benefit to Platinum when flying business class - I will just take the status as it comes, and be happy with Gold(shortly) in the interim.

You're pretty much spot on there. If you're mainly flying domestic and in J anyway, WP is pretty much negligible. The only real benefit I see for having WP is when travelling internationally and in Y, for this you can access F check-in queues, F lounges, OWE priority boarding and have an increased chance in getting upgrades/op-ups.

For me, I worked out many many months ago that I don't fly enough to get any meaningful status with anyone so I skipped the status chases, and decided that when I do to fly international, I am going to go at least J so that I get pretty much the same benefits minus the nicer F lounges.
