Indonesian Cuisine - A Tad Off Putting

Surely an Aussie tourist can tell the difference between a chicken satay and a dog satay?
There are times in Thailand where I can't tell what type of meat I'm eating. Cut so small and the only thing you can taste are the 16 different herbs and spices they have added to hide the quality of the meat.

Unless of course you ask.

That sounds worrying.

No, no ... only meat that has no taste. Like chicken.
Yes the 11 herbs and spices creates the flavour. Breast has no flavour. Thigh and drumstick more flavour

USA chicken has a distinct yellow tinge as they are fed corn. Looks yuck and does not taste like corn

I just read this article.

Tourists warned of danger in Indonesia

Eeek.

Surely an Aussie tourist can tell the difference between a chicken satay and a dog satay?

This article is a load of scaremongering BS, and is a rehash of the same story from about 6 months ago. The AU media will print anything to make indonesia look bad.

Dogs are not cheap! end of story.

Dog meat in indonesia is a very expensive delicacy (not all, only some regiions traditionally eat it, some dont) and is normally for very special celebrations. If there is indeed a black market in farming/kidnapping/mistreating dogs then they are doing it to make good money, not by passing it off as chicken which is dirt cheap and far more numerous.

Those street sellers would be bankrupt if they are selling dog meat as a substitute.

(i'm half indonesian)

carry on.

Completely agree. It only takes about 8 weeks to "make" a plump chicken.

This sort of drivel story just tries to get ratings using sensibilities of different cultures.

Beats me on the veracity or otherwise of the story. The part that made no sense to me was that about kidnapping dogs, as there are thousands of dogs roaming around the streets of Bali. They would be extremely cheap.

there is not 'thousands' and the ones you do see are scrawny mingy mutts with no meat on them.

it doesnt matter if 'dog' is easy to kidnap, the market in indonesia is dog meat is an expensive luxury, nobody is going to sell it wholesale cheaper than chicken.

this story is about as dumb as saying the cigarette shops are substituting tobacco with marijuan_.

Excellent post, good to get the logical point of view on this. I’ve always thought the dog meat stories are fake due to simple economics.

However we need to remember it’s 2018. Isn’t “truth” defined by the number of views, likes and reposts that a story gets, and not the facts on the ground? Your facts, although real, are not relevant as they do not involve scaremongering and the social media algorithms would not feed them to others, and media would not pick up on it, as no-one would be interested ...

Sorry for my cynicism, but this thread is an excellent illustration of the way mistruths are easily (and usually deliberately by algorithm) promulgated in the social media era to drive views / engagement.

90% aren't stray dogs - but the owners don't feed them or give them water according to the fourth "myth" in the article below.

By our definition in Australia, that would mean about 100% of dogs are stray in Bali.

Myths & Facts about Bali Dogs - BAWA | Bali Animal Welfare Association

And by my reckoning, if 10% of the 150,000 dogs in Bali that they classify as not belonging to anybody in any sense of the word are acknowledged as pure strays - that's 15,000 stray dogs.

Renato
