Indonesia Air Asia flight QZ 8501 loses contact with ATC

ABC 24 reporting it as a very sad year for Malaysian aviation...

Indonesia AirAsia (QZ) is part of the Malaysian AirAsia group in the same way as Jetstar Asia (3K) is part of the Qantas group. In both cases they have a 51% local partner due to foreign ownership laws.

This incident is sad for Malaysian aviation as a hypothetical 3K incident would be to Jetstar and Australian aviation.

(Never mind the fact that the average passenger makes no distinction between AirAsia, AirAsiaX, Thai AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, Thai AirAsiaX and Indonesia AirAsiaX, who all are related but separate airlines)

The Bali bombing was aimed at Australians as well as the perceived unMuslim behaviour partaken in that area and the 09 Jarkata bombings were aimed at foreigners too (foreigners, as in Australians and Europeans less so than people from other Asian countries).
Anyway, you may be right. I'd just be surprised if they took out a small A320 flying on that route.

Word is that the Bali bombing was aimed at foreigners and Americans in general not specifically at Australians.

That's what I was told by someone who should know. Totally agree my post is open to outright rejection as unsubstantiated. But I trust the source of my info. So no real need to discuss any further.
 
This scenario reminds me a lot of the Air Crash Investigation episode with the Adam Air flight 574 crash on 1st January 2007 which was also flying out of Surabaya (to Manado) on a B737-400 in similar bad weather.

seq no 120 is different

Pax named MERRY, MERRY is a bit odd. Just saying.

Check out the other person's name seq 119 travelling with the above on the same pnr. :shock: You wouldn't want to page them if they were fail to board pax. I find it quite bizarre the manifest of the pax was printed on a noticeboard in the room where relatives of the pax onboard where waiting (not sure if it was SIN or SUB) which people were freely taking photos of.

Very sad for the relatives that the whole world knows about the assumed death of their loved ones before they do. No such thing as privacy or respect for the victims or their families.

SkyNews also reporting QZ as 'the Malaysian based carrier' which is actually D7. They were also interviewing pax checking in for their D7 flight to KUL but you can't expect the media to get their head around the intricasies of the different Air Asia variants. I'm just surprised they got the aircraft type and series correct ie reporting it as an A320-200 although they have pictures on their website of a D7 Malaysian registered A330. :rolleyes:
 
A Chinese media outlet is allegedly reporting that the plane wreckage has been found either on or near the island where the flight was last located. This requires confirmation.

www.airfleets.net has already recorded the aircraft involved as 'written off', which was done more than a few minutes ago. It was a very early judgement call.

May not be that odd. May be that being an LCC, they hold back allocating premium seats until last minute - I know some carriers (3K for example) even still sell unallocated premium seats on board.

Also note it is not uncommon for Indonesians to only have a single name.

that's why i am just saying it is interesting.
thinking further, they would probably have an incentive to no show as their tickets are presumably also more likely to be flexible
 
This is almost certainly another case of hull loss, no?

I have a whole bunch of questions (sorry!):

They wouldn't have had enough fuel to still be in the air by now, and what's the likelihood of a safe landing somewhere and not being able to get a radio message out?

Can authorities track all the messages from engine feedback etc (sorry, not sure of technical terms) to pinpoint locations?

And I guess the really big question is - did MH370's disappearance change the way airlines track their aircraft?

Why no distress broadcasts?

Lots of people are talking about AF447, do pilots have to practice these scenarios in simulators as part of ongoing training?

That's a purported leaked ATC screenshot near the time that the flight went missing. The high altitude (36,300 feet) and low speed (353 knots) has probably caused people to compare it to AF447, even if there isn't any hard evidence to suggest that as yet. Of course, AF447 suffered malfunctioning instruments flying through a thunderstorm, then a confused crew that led to a stall (high altitude, low speed) and a crash.

i read this was an all Y class flight?

Does P class mean something else on AIrAsia??

just ts recounted and saw 21 on same PNR

totally devastating for that groups loved ones
 
Artemis, as far as no distress broadcast, the flight crew are more concerned with getting control of the aircraft. Using the radio is much lower on the list of priorities.
