If Flightradar24 is correct QZ502 was right behind it. When it left radar coverage. Anyone know the METARs in that area at the time?

Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa Djuraid told Metro TV that the plane lost contact somewhere between Kalimantan and Belitung island. He added that the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact, but he did not elaborate.

"The weather was not good - it was bad -- at the estimated location the plane lost contact. We just received a weather report from the national meteorological, geophysics and climatology agency," said Hadi.

Mr Tatang Zainudin of Indonesia's national search and rescue agency also told MetroTV that the pilot might have faced extreme weather condition.

Air Asia however unlike most JQ operations is a minority shareholder, was started as AWair.

Jetstar is a minority shareholder in Asia (Singapore) 49%, Pacific (Vietnam) 30%, Japan 35% and the proposed HK venture

The only foreign operations it fully owns is New Zealand thanks to the SAM agreement

With the recent increase in 'chatter' I fear this may be something more sinister :(

If a Jetstar Asia plane went down, I am sure it would be reported as a Qantas group plane.

Awful news that is unlikely to have a good ending. Is it churlish to find solace in it not being another Malaysian ?

The words you never want to see an the arrivals screen.

Dreadful news for families and friends.

MasterP flies Air Asia frequently through Asia and has a flight booked Monday week. Might have a chat.

I'm also pleased that these days I don't tell my mother we are overseas (this week) as she always assumes we are on the flight that is downed (last time we were away it was MH over the Ukraine) and she stressed everyone in the family by ringing them at 6am in a highly distressed state. Just not needed.

I'm not sure whatever the reason makes it any better or worse.

Similar story here. Myself (and my father) were in the checkin queue at Tel Aviv airport when news of MH17 came through. We were also flying a 777 so a few friends got a bit of a fright as they had no idea what our route was between TLV and HKG was.

Pushka, sensible as always.

However we need to bear in mind that regular public transport aviation is generally very safe. That does not mitigate the possible terrible outcome for family and friends of today's event (not that we yet know definitively).

Let's all pray to the Lord during this Christmas time that the passengers and crew will all be found safe and well, although optimism will understandably not be the first thought of many.

I'd never say no, but I couldn't see Indonesia or Singapore being a major target.

Indonesia as constantly had issues, have you forgotten the Bali bombing? That was one aimed at foreigners but there is a very long list of domestic activity such as Solo etc

The Bali bombing was aimed at Australians as well as the perceived unMuslim behaviour partaken in that area and the 09 Jarkata bombings were aimed at foreigners too (foreigners, as in Australians and Europeans less so than people from other Asian countries).
Anyway, you may be right. I'd just be surprised if they took out a small A320 flying on that route.
