Hi, and apologies if this has been asked before but I've searched and found no answers.

We are two Australian citizens, looking at flying to Europe with JAL: the itinerary we are considering has a 12 hour layover in transit at Narita airport. Does anyone know if, even though in transit, we would be able to leave the airport and spend the night in an airport hotel before continuing the journey? Thanks!

Should not be a problem - I did this myself some years ago with an 8pm arrival and a 2pm departure.

Thanks ... did you need a transit visa? What about luggage? Presumably you had to collect and then check in again? Excuse me, I'm a bit "green" when it comes to long haul stuff!

Australians don't need a visa for Japan for stays of up to 90 days.

You may have the option to have your luggage through-checked from SYD right the way through to your final destination. If this is what you want, ask at the check-in counter (it can depend on your exact itinerary and timings for transit).

If you through-check all the way you should also get all your boarding passes at the same time. This means you head straight from your hotel back to Narita and straight to the security queue.

If you decide you want your bags in Narita, ask for this at check-in. Then you will need to complete check-in again at Tokyo.

We have done it >20 times.Absolutely no problems.
If your layover is during the day you can leave and visit Narita town without a problem-except in and out Immigration and security back in.
