All the talk at the moment about IFE has got me wondering about how people like their IFE?

Particularly as people are increasingly “Bringing Their Own” equipment & content onboard - so what do you think airlines should be providing in terms of in flight AV entertainment? (Let’s leave Telephony & Internet out of the equation for the moment.)

* More information on Tray table technology (This option is combined with Arm Rest due to the lack of choices AFF provides when creating a poll & as both avoid the tapping on the back of the head issues, with top of seat back equipment.)

The answer may vary for short, medium and long haul. Happy with nothing on short haul (or the option you are missing ... BYO book ...), BYO for medium haul, but for long haul prefer airline provided in seat entertainment ....

I prefer it to be built into the back of the seat in front, I prefer AVOD, and I prefer to have it included in the ticket price. (I hate unbundling \ LCC)

Whilst I have yet to go on any flight with AVOD as an option since getting my iPad, I would probably chose AVOD over my iPad simply because the screen is at eye level, where as for a portable device I either need to hold onto it by hand or set it up on my tray table, after a few hours of staring down at a screen the back of my neck starts to feel it something bad plus unless your lucky enough to have an empty seat next to you, you usually need to put your own devices away during dinner...

Great idea for a poll!

Only early in the voting but seatback IFE has the lead by a mile and that's too be expected

Any portable solution is a pain to have sitting on the tray table!

Of course we are STILL waiting for Virgin to announce their plans but not expecting the 737's to have a seatback solution

I selected both payment methods in 3. as I think it should be both, there should be free stuff and perhaps also pay-as-you-go for more exclusive stuff, and a third option with special access for status members with a card swipe would be nice :)

I voted Live TV over a set of pre-recorded/on demand content purely on the basis that after a couple of flights a month, I probably would have watched everything. Having live television works well for me, I'll usually watch the news from top of decent until we arrive at the gate.

Why not? DJ had seatback IFE in their 737's well before QF started to put seatback in

In my opinion IFE should be included in airfare and not charged separately.

I really do not want to be carrying any portable devices of my own when I am on holidays. The less technological junk the better....

Different strokes for different folks. I know a number of AFFers prefer their own laptop/Ipad/whatever because they may have already seen the movies available on AVOD. I almost never watch movies except on planes, so am usually happy with the AVOD choice. And, in general terms, have a real dislike for buy onboard - don't want to part with a cent after I have paid my fare.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I voted for the buy-on-board option... probably due to the number of red eyes I take. Might as well save a few cents since I'm just going to be sleeping anyway.

I adopt the counter argument to you! When travelling, be it work or pleasure, I have an arsonel of technology - iPhone, iPad, Macbook Air, portable wifi and a myriad of chargers and converters.

hmm, in retrospect, why do I need to be so connected?

Returning to the topic, I predominantly provide my own entertainment through my tablet or notebook. The flight map has also provided hours of entertainment...lets now forget the view through the window.

Agree, and I have a 10" notebook with over 100 movies just in case, and with the exeption of a phone that is the only technology I take on trips.

Because all the new aircraft don't have anything
The refitted aircraft don't' have anything
They still haven't announced anything

Hence the need for this poll which far from being scientific or representative of the general public, it still shows a huge majority want a seat-back solution and not a half-coughd portable solution

I envy the people who carry their own IFE. I have a fairly heavy work laptop, and pretty much use up my weight allowance with it. Not a candidate to take anything else as I have fairly stringent weight limits on some legs of my travel; and do not want to put anything "important" (like power cords or converters) into checked luggage.

My "own IFE" is indeed my laptop!

I load movies onto it and watch at my convenience. Four or five moves should take up no more than 20Gbyte if loaded direct from DVD - less if you employ a lower resolution.

Once I tried a small DVD player but could not get it loud enough to hear properly over the white noise of the aircraft, even with amplifying N/C headphones.

I use VLC (Free) or an OEM copy of PowerDVD as they have volume level settings of over 100%.
