Well after a gruelling journey fraught with various disasters, I arrived in VIE but my check-in didn't.

Flew SYD, PER, LHR, VIE.

1st two sectors on QF, last sector BA.

I placed a lost bag claim with AAS at the airport. They are the Ground Handling Agent for BA in Vienna.
That of course assumes that the bag made it as far as LHR.

I can see the missing bag report in BA's system, but other than that it tells me nothing.
Right now I have no idea where the bag is.

Anything else I can / should do?

Bad luck, but those things happen.
I would look at what is covered with your travel insurance, or credit card insurance, assuming you triggered the conditions to activate it.

Would also check what is cover by the airline / EU legisltion, if any. Don t know off the top of my head. Goodluck.

I feel your pain OP - last month I flew FRA-BUD-DXB-MEL with a 1hr 10min connection in BUD - FRA dep delayed 50mins so now 20min connection in BUD - EK staff awaiting me at aerobridge and simply asked can you run and are you prepared to travel without your luggage?

Yes to both - I literally ran to change terminals and pass immig and made the flt - luggage didn’t - it arrived in MEL 2 days after I did - BUT - I did have AirTag in bag and could track it’s progress the whole time.

I know this will not help you in your current situation but as general advice def all pax should invest in AirTags or whatever Google use

Pray tell us more about the various other disasters on the gruelling journey?
Well, fortunately nothing with a capital D disaster, but just one thing after another.

trains in Sydney running slow
Flight to PER delayed
I had seat 40K on QF9, to discover a couple and their basinet infant in 40I/J. Second 787 flight in a row that has happened to me. Fortunately moved to 40F.
Got gastro so haven't eaten for 2 days
So zonked out of my head by the time I got to LHR that I left my jacket (with Passport and Boarding Pass) in the toilets of the BA lounge. Fortunately I was re-united after a visit to the service desk.
Flight to VIE delayed due to VIE being fogged in. We ended up doing an autoland (well I guess it must have been, because I couldn't see a thing until (O look, there's the - THUMP)
Immigration area at VIE being refurbished. Only 2 booths open with hordes of people.
NO BAG!
Trains in VIE delayed. Train left 1/2 hour late. Then, stopped halfway and said (in German) that they weren't going any further and we all had to get out. Found a nice couple who spoke english who told me what was going on, and we walked together to bus to U-Bahn station.

I think that pretty much covers it.

All my 3 trains in the UK were delayed/diverted recently and I wasn't aware that I was entitled to compensation under the Delay Repay scheme until someone pointed it out to me. It was a seamless online claim and I got half my fare back, so perhaps there is something similar in Austria... @Mattg ?

Good thinking, but since that train ticket was $6.63, I don't think I'll bother.

Didn't know that! We were delayed on the Eurostar for hours once, stopped at the entrance to the tunnel eastbound, I just blamed the French, as you do 🙂 Live and learn.

Yep - the lost luggage sounds pretty much par for the course on this trip.

Some of the refunds are even automatic these days. I discovered it recently when I saw random refunds back to my card from TfL (Transport for London).

Yes but I don't have a local account and had paid cash for my train fares...

I suggest next time* you put Airtags (or equivalent) in your luggage.

Just recently back from MEL-PER/PER-SIN-HEL-MAN/LHR-HEL-LAX-SYD-MEL used Airtags all the way with the peace of mind my two bags had made it into the hold (oh, and the circuitous routes they sometimes take - often separately - in order to get there!). Even if they don't make it, you'll be able to update Baggage Services at your destination as to precisely where they are located rather than being in complete ignorance.

Regards,

BD

*Unless flying NZ of course!

An update - after no new and forlornly checking the BA missing baggage report, and the report still promptly displaying in bold red"1 Bag Still Missing" and "We are still searching for your bag", I noticed a little link next to the QF Bag receipt number, "View Tracking Information", so I clicked it, and it says:

Where is my baggage?

This bag is on route to your local airport. We will contact you when it has arrived and we have verified it is yours.
Bag is on route from
MELBOURNE
Final destination
VIE/DXB
Flight details
EK0407 / 15 November 2022/EK0127 / 16 November 2022

This seems to indicate that my bag was not even loaded onto QF9, presuming it even made it as far as PER.
I think this is pretty disgusting, especially the amount of handwringing of late from a certain AJ about how poor QF service has been of late.
Less hand-wringing, more action!

Anyway, if this is correct, my bag should be in Vienna by now so hopefully should receive today.

Travel insurance will pay for $500 emergency expenses.

Anyway, it is good to know that at least some computer somewhere seems to think it knows that my bag has not been eaten by the Langoliers, which is a great relief!

Seems very strange its being flown from MEL when you didnt transit MEL. Maybe it was loaded onto a MEL flight by accident.

My bag is here!!!!!

It seems all of the prevailing wisdom here was correct.
Up until the moment your bag actually arrives, they don't know anything.

I contact them earlier to today to tell them that the tracking said my bag had arrived yesterday, and they said they still didn't have my bag and the tracking was wrong.

Just arrived back to my accomodation and the bag was in the foyer. No phone call or anything. It just arrived.

First thing I will do now is put my airtag inside it!

Thanks again to all.

Oh yes. I just bought Tiles for my current trip. And lo and behold, they made the lost luggage claim a breeze when I could tell the agent that my bag got stuck at LHR while I continued my journey onward. But they had only 3 hours to transfer the bag - must have been right in the middle of a tea break...

OK, there may have been a different reason, too: the inbound QF1 was delayed and I missed my original connection on AY. QF did automatically push me to the next flight but when I rocked up to the gate to collect my boarding pass, the agent there mentioned that it had not been ticketed. Did someone mention earlier about QF having trouble ticketing partner flights??? My was a revenue ticket but QF1 on a points upgrade (class Z). Perhaps it was all too much for their ticketing to handle. And perhaps it caused the bag to stall, as well.

I'm now betting on two weeks for the luggage to arrive. Any takers??? 😆
