Hi all. Apparently ihg is closing accounts down due to abuse of promo codes. I really think. If you use codes. Stay & pay. Really what's. It matter? Ihg should put a bar on codes that your not targeted for,
if they don't want you to register for them.

Unfortunately IHG have a history of blaming others for their own shortcomings!

Looks like they ran a sweep early June, I personally know of one account that's closed. Makes to wonder if they can detect when folks eligible for a promo, why don't they stop them registering on that basis in the first place.

Yes, that's sort of what I was implying. Rather than getting their own systems right they allow everyone to register and then they cancel their accounts. From what I've heard IHG were very aware of this situation for some time and chose to do nothing. Poor form IMO.

They have had a presence in a formal capacity on FT for some time for a start, I have no doubt they are well aware even before the bloggers hit. The corporate machine sure produces some strange things at times.

Indeed, we won't just identify and remove the invalid codes, we will flag the accounts and then when they use them close the account. Sounds like more work to me and also piss off your customers, quite strange behaviour!

I had a stay on saturday night at melbourne airport HI and now for the last two days I am unable to log in to my account. I get the following message:

"We are sorry, the IHG Rewards club system is currently unavailable. You may still make reservations without your IHG rewards club member number. Just modify your reservation later to add your member number or present it upon checkin at the hotel." Can this perhaps be translated succinctly as "You are screwed"? Strange as all I did was load a bunch of codes from the master thread. Admittedly as I haven't stayed with them for over a year there were many apparently successful code registrations.

PS my calm literary tone is not completely representative of my actual feelings about this.

Sounds like one of those honesty box veggie sellers who realise that the veggies disappearing from their stall doesn't match the money left in the honesty box.

So what do you do? Well, you could either create a "veggie vending machine" that protects your veggies until people actually want to buy them, or you could spy on those who take without paying, follow them and then nail them.

IHG sounds like they've done the latter, except a lot more superficially as it is really obscure in some cases as to whether people are truly not entitled to a promotion or not. I remember before how they used to have a question on the promo code signup page that asked "How did you find out about this promo?". If you answered "Website / Blog" almost all of the time, you certainly would not be lying!

This is not a particularly good sign as this exactly how others found out their accounts were closed.

I think they have no clue who is actually eligible for their own promo's! You can actually find some of own promo codes in their own hotel literature.

Considering they devalued their program last year but keep having promo's dishing out points like no tomorrow, makes the IHG rewards program one of the most inconsistent.

While I dont 100% agree (some codes are pretty clear they are for Ambassadors or for Elites) many codes are indeed published all over the place including hotel literature and Priority Club Insider. While I appreciate from looking through the fine print that Priority Club Insider is not in fact associated with IHG it seems to me that many casual observors (ignoring the hard core FT'ers and AFF'ers for a moment) may well have enrolled for promo's thinking they are totally legitimate and have been penalised.

In an internet savvy world published and publically available may mean somewhat more than IHG intended but that doesnt mean they aren't indeed published and publically available, and IHG has done nothing as far as I am aware to ask these websites to remove these codes.

No doubt FT'ers will be talking about a class action, I'm not a fan of legal action in general but this is one case where I do think IHG's behaviour in this regard has been unconscionable.
.

There is some anecdotal evidence that the sweep is being done on new accounts only perhaps they have uncovered a large number of new account, stay one night and run type operations.

Actually gets even worse, apparently many of these codes are posted on IHG's own blog, now thats really ridiculous if any of the codes people are being suspended for appear there!

IHG Rewards Club Connect - IHG Rewards Club Connect

On a side topic, if you have registered for a promo and are now having second thoughts (I haven't so not asking on my own behalf) is there a way to actually remove promos from your account?

This makes no sense.

They can't detect if you are not eligible for a promotion when you enrol but they can detect later.

You wont find me disagreeing with this, in fact doesnt seem to be anyone prepared to advocate for IHG on this.

Hi Markis. Do you think, maybe accounts with few stays are also
being targeted? I'm relatively new to ihg. So now a tad worried

Who knows, however there was a report of two accounts with the same promo code regos staying a week or so ago, the one with previous history is still open.

Thanks. Good news. I've. had about 15 stays with ihg this year. We have really enjoyed
the treatment at Intercontinental s

The anecdotal evidence is that people that have made a number of stays, most are fine.

It could be IHG is targeting new accounts with only one or two night stays, which are abusing promo accounts, which might be using the points earnt, to sell off Point breaks nights to other people on Ebay.

I was reading on FT, earlier this year they did a purge of Chinese accounts.
