Don't knock the HHonors/SPG rewards programs too much. I am staying 'for free' at the BOS Hilton (airport) next week that would have cost over AUD240.

Last year I stayed at the Anchorage Hilton for 30K HHonors points; avoiding rates starting at AUD450.

Which one? I have had three stays at the Millenium in the last 6 months as an HH Gold and have been treated very well each time. (Upgrade to exec lounge etc every time) However, aside from a 25K award stay, the cheapest rate I paid was USD119.

I had a fantastic 4 days at the Millenium Hilton in BKK in November (the only nice part about the entire visit to Thailand) - we had a suite (paid about US190/night) - very nice and very nicely treated AND it started me on my roll to HHOnors GOld/Diamond :)
