Last Wednesday I flew out of SIN on QF10 to MEL on 4 class 744. I was seated in prime seat, first row of economy - centre aisle seat, my feet could not even touch the bulkhead. Due to a problem with a seat further back in the cabin - on board I was offered an upgrade to Y+ (non aisle seat), and i sort of shrugged ambivalence, and the person next to me was asked and declined, and then a third who also declined.

Were we all crazy? Maybe, but I looked at it this way - no one reclining on me immediate aisle access vs Y+ with someone to recline on me and no access to the aisle. They guy sitting next to me - even though in a centre seat - had the same thoughts and indeed he climbed out over me several times without even disturbing me - something he could not have done in the Y+ cabin. If it was the 380, maybe I would have taken it.

You're crazy! I would have taken it over Y any day! :)

Not crazy.
I would stay with a baulkhead aisle seat in Y rather than a middle in Y+, and BIS time is only 7hrs 15mins.

Not entirely crazy.

I'd take the upgrade only because the recline in Y+ is noticeably better than in Y, even in the front row where the leg room can be a bit cramped (compared to the seat you had). But I am a short person so that doesn't bother me too much.

If you were taller then keeping to your seat would have been a fine idea.

The only other perks - food and drink - are of minimal note on an overnight flight like this.

I have had a think about this; with QF10 from SIN I'd be looking to mainly sleep, so a middle Y+ seat would be fine as I'd not likely be getting up much and no-one is going to climb over you.

.. I would have accepted the offer.

I would have taken the upgrade in a heartbeat... But that's just me...

Sleeping wasn't an issue for me - I'd already written that off, as my normal bed time is around 11:30pm (and that's in a proper bed), so I figured chances of sleeping was low (just sleep when I get home). I'm actually used doing that sector on EK, which leaves at the much better time of 22:30!

It was just odd that all three of us declined!

Why were you offered the upgrade when there was nothing wrong with your seat?

Some people crave recline while others legroom....I'm a legroom guy so the seat you had in Y on the aisle sounds perfect to me.

Yes definitely makes one think

Have only flown Y+ once and loved it, but was with DH with 2 seats so easy to step over, but I did notice some ladies across the isle who seemed to have some difficulty getting out when the seats in front were reclined.

Have been in exit row seats and that was great to get up and move about.

I would love to be placed in the dilema as that would mean I would have a good seat either way. (better than straight out Y)

You must have flown the same flight as me the day before.

I don't think you are crazy.

I was in 40C and I don't think I would have accepted an upgrade to premium economy to sit in a middle seat. Aisle seat is a different story but the recline in premium economy makes it almost impossible to get out of your seat if sitting in window or middle seats.

Status. Prefer to upgrade those with status first, which is why we were all in the first row of Y in the first place.
Not always the case. I think sometimes it would be simpler to upgrade the person having issues than to look for the highest status member and upgrade them. I believe this was the case with the person who got upgraded to premium economy (middle seat) after someone was sitting in his seat and refused to move.

Interesting point John. Depends who they are really? Reminds of that wonderful story about a BA flight out of JNB.

Status should have benefits, one would think.

Believe me when I say I would be the first to agree with you on that point but we read plenty of stories on AFF, and witness for ourselves, all too often people with little or no status constantly getting pre-allocated exit rows and getting upgrades to higher cabins.

If it was a daytime flight, I would have turned the upgrade down, and on the night flight the same, with a bit more hesitation. The extra seat pitch in Y+ is negated by the additional recline in the row in front, big problem in a middle seat because you have to limbo dance out at a greater angle.

I find the Y+ seats much better for sleeping, but wouldn't sleep much on SIN-MEL so this wouldn't sway me. If it was SIN-LHR I would have taken it.

If it was an A380 I would have made the same difference, only difference of significance I can see with them in Y+ is one less row of middle seats. If you're in that row its no consolation at all.

Cheers skip

I was in 40G. Great seat for whY, it has that nice little mini cabin feel as well, being the only row forward of the toilets.
