Off to Honolulu later this month & the plan is to buy an i pad from the Apple store in Waikiki.
All I know is there is no point buying the 4G model.
I have researched & worked out I will need a wireless router, but do I
1. Buy an Apple one when I am there or could I buy any brand & if so which one.
2 .Will a US one work in Australia.I have no idea about them.............
3. If I want to start using it in Hawaii what about ISP????....we will only be there for 10 days & back here in Aust our provider is Optus............do I need a separate provider for the US..........No idea how that all works so sorry..

Any recommendations/advice is appreciated.
Thanks.

Needs can differ. I would just use hotel/Starbucks/maccas free wifi there. I would come back and buy a basic cheap router from the local cheapo computer store that imports from China. A router may be cheaper there but you are not talking much money.

Now you can buy an Airport express so you can connect an ethernet cable in the hotel room to the AE and make a wireless network. Because obviously ethernet cables dont work with the iPad. I did that but because I bought it at the airport I didn't have a chance to set it up properly with a password and other people could have shared my connection. Maybe others can instruct you how to do that.

Don't buy a wireless router in the US. The power plug will be different, and you will still need to have internet access to it anyway.

The apple product may be worldwide (so it works on most cellular networks) but there will be no point getting a SIM card for it in the US just for 10 days.

Earsier just to use the hotel wireless or freebie ones.

Once you are back home if you are only going to use it wirelessly at home, then just get your self a wireless modem or router. If you need to use it for internet connectivity while mobile you may need to research if the US model will work with Oz telcos. But you can always use your mobile as a wireless access point, if it supports it, and you have a data plan on your phone.

Wow so much disinformation.

Let's break it down:

- The US iPad can be bought either as WiFi only or 4G/3G compatible - 4G is a marketing term used in a lot of places. If you buy a US 4G it can be used on Oz 3G networks
- A US sim could be bought for $30 so could be useful for 10 days if you don't get free wifi in the hotel
- Don't buy a US router as that will only feed a US connection

So if I ave a iPad series 1, wifi only, and moving to a place with no Internet and require access that I need to provide what is te best way to do this?

I have a cable Telstra plan at home. This will be a six week assignment, not a huge downloader but do want good access?

What does the wisdom of the crowd say?

I know that Ozmark - however the telcos do "interpret" the term so I think consumers should be wary relying on the term.

There is actually a technical definition of 4G used by the ITU (the requirements are detailed in IMT-Advanced).

Correct, but AT&T use it as a marketing term for it's 3.5G 7mb 3G network.

It's a whole heap of mis-information from the carriers.

?

Umm, if there's no internet, you can't access the internet.

Just print out a hard copy of the internet and take it with you for easy access.

When are you going?
Mrs GPH and I will be there from the 13th

OK
So if there is no WiFi I will need to buy a sim..........Any recommendations there please?
Do I buy a wireless modem or wireless router when we fet back home?
Simongr...So I didn't think 4G was any benefit at all.........is it worth the extra$.....I would be using Optus, do not understand if 3G is a provider or what
GPH going on the 21May.

Thanks

Why not take a phone and use its hotspot capability in conjunction with a local SIM,and use its hotspot capability, or just get the 4G which can still be used here on 3G, no big deal.

With the ipad, you can access the internet via Wi Fi , or if you purchase a 3G/4G model, that means you can stick a SIM card in it, and access the internet that way ( like a mobile phone). So if you buy the wi fi model, you cannot put a SIM card in it.

What is your current internet set up at home?

And in addition, the "new iPad" actually supports tethering for other devices too, so you can use your phones with the iPad.

You can get 'unlimited' data on AT&T for $50 a month, if you play your cards right. I need to update the stick with the mobile data for the USA on this thread, but haven't gotten around to it yet (AT&T just changed their pre-paid pricing plans).

Worst case is the iPad will still support the 3.5G standard DC/DB HSDPA standard which will give you 23.4mb theoretical maximum on Telstra here.

I hope previous versions had this too... If not it really cements my views about cough apple technology.
