Some people are really cheap :!:
When you arrive near midnight and leave at 6am in the morning - staying air side might be a better option. And why pay for the broom cupboard that masquerades as a transit hotel when you don't have to?

I don't think either of the oneworld lounges open 24/7 though?

Not when it can be overnight accomodation for some. ;) :D
Oops, I forgot about that. Spend thousands of dollars in airfares and save $100/night on accommodation by transitting overnight in airline lounges.

Reminds of someone I knew who travelled selling paintings in country NSW. He would sleep in the station wagon and go into an RSL when they opened to freshen up before going out on sales pitches!

A poor student who qualifies as LH SEN?

I take it you don't go to on-campus meetings of the Socialist Alliance, then?;)

I can;t afford the insurance that I'd need for a member of the ALP Right to proceed within a 5 metre radius of a Socialist Alternative/Alliance meeting. ;)

Gettin' a bit OT here ...

However, FWIW I often travel MEL to AKL, arriving ~1am; fly to WLG/CHC 7am. I can afford the minimum NZ$120 it would cost for accommodation, catch a shuttle bus to town and airbus back ... but for what? 4 Hours sleep and a shower?

I can get nearly the same amount of shut eye by napping in the terminal ... head to Dom QP @ 5:30 and have a (complimentary) shower and breakfast before flying off to points south. Cost for this? Zip!

Now Back OT ...

A couple of years ago I had a 13 hour transit at Changi (5am-6pm). I utilised the terminals there; did the free city tour/bum boat ride and found several means to pass the time, including watching a free move in one of the Theaters.

Great place!

However I saw all I could of the place then and given the same transit again; I would be off into town for the day in a flash ...

I'm not as nearly experienced as most others here, so I'm always very impressed by (the staff at) Changi.

From arrival, having trolleys available almost at the plane's door, through immigration and customs, and luggage pick-up, to departure and the check-in staff, customs and immigration on the way out, and trolleys everywhere. Clear signage, and people polite and helpful (and usually smiling). The whole process, coming in or going out, is done within 30 minutes, at a steady, but not overly-fast, pace. And the facilities provided for passengers are excellent.

Compare that with Sydney where trolleys seem an impossible dream, the staff (airport, airline, customs, immigration) all seem to be, well, suspicious and even jealous (that you've been overseas, and they haven't), and it takes hours.

As said earlier in this thread, Sydney could learn a lot from Changi.

FWIW I would wait in AKL for the 5:45am LAN flight if I was arriving at 1:00am and I would probably even wait for the 7:00am flight to WLG.

I only made that comment knowing some people would rather spend the night in A lounge rather than worrying about getting a bed in a hotel room. Nothing wrong with that either but I woud rather sleep in a bed than sleeping in a lounge or a skybed on an aircraft.

YMMV!
