Hi

I will being going to the UK and Western countries of Europe in Sept for a month.

I have a iphone 4S (micro-sim) and a ipad that is just wifi - no sim.

I want to be able to do a couple of things.

Call Australia and call local in Uk & Europe (mainly to make bookings etc) and use the internet on my ipad.

I was thinking of getting sim that allows me to use my phone as a modem (fingers crossed because i have never sucessfully been able to do it on my phone - not a techy person) and connect my ipad to the iphone and use the internet and possibly skype for free this way. I also wouldn't mide making calls on my phone to Oz as well.

Is this possible or suggested or is there a better way around this? Also what is your recommendations of products/services and with whom?

I have read some other thread and I am looking into it, but i need to be given some basic advice and info as this is so confussing

Hi Fifi
You have a number of options and all have there advantages and disadvantages. I cannot help with the best as it depends on the persons requirements
Options.
1. Buy a local prepaid phone and Sim that has a data plan included. this means you can still use your current phone as required
2. Buy a local prepaid SIM that includes data and calls txt etc. Call forward your current number to the new phone number and replace current sim with the new one. You wont miss calls and txt but i am unsure about emails, as this depends on your setup
3. Use your current phone but only sparingly and not data.

For your ipad a lot of places have fee Wifi so use that as much as possible.

Re using the phone as a Wifi point see a resent article in AusBT.com.au [How to avoid the overseas data roaming rip-off - Flights | hotels | frequent flyer | business class - Australian Business Traveller ] it was on saving costs, this may also give you some additional ideas.
Re the best sim options, many here will have a number of suggestions and it depends on if you are based in one place or moving around a lot. This is the site I use to find information www.prepaidgsm.net and look for iPhone options
There is also a rate from AirNZ for a flat rate per day roaming that may be worth while.
