In the past I have used Marriott Bonvoy as a program to launder Amex Rewards points to AAdvantage. This used to be reasonable value, but in recent years the transfer rates have been "enhanced" and transfer bonus promotions have been non-existent.
I knew it was a while since I had transacted through Marriott, but thought I must still have a few months to go until the remaining 134K points would expire. The monthly email from Marriott always includes the points balance, but not the date at which they expire - at least not that I can easily locate. So when my September email arrived, I thought I had better log in and check when the dreaded expiry would be. Low and behold, I was presented with "123K points expired 31 August 2025". My last activity would have been the last bonus offer for transferring Amex to Bonvoy and they have been sitting there waiting for a bonus opportunity for transfer out to AAdvantage, hoping they might return the old 10K bonus per 25K transferred. But alas, crickets on that front for 2 years.
However, the points were still showing in the system, even though they were noted as expired. So I tried to see if I could transfer them out, And low and behold the system allowed my to transfer my now expired points to AAdvantage. So all 134K got sent immediately. I did not want to risk transferring a small amount hoping it would trigger an expiry counter reset and risk losing forever whatever was left.
Checked today and the points have arrived in my AAdvantage account, so looks like I managed to avoid the ultimate sin - just. I suspect if I had not managed to move the points out before the next statement was prepared, they would have been gone-ski forever.
So AAdvantage balance grew by a little under 49K miles. I'll be keeping the Amex points in Amex account now until I find a better home for them.
