Hypothetical....

Imagine ....that the holder of a qantas ultimate amex card ,approaching the renewal date , asked for a better deal.. and was refused.... :evil:

So before cancelling the card, the holder buys a geegaw from qantas shop and books the flight he/she/it never got around to using for a hypothetical date in the future.

Would this flight then be transferable to an earlier or later date?
Would there be a rebooking fee if the flight was transferable ?
Would the subsequent cancellation of the card affect the booking ?

So, what really happened?

Had to be a hypothesis.. couldn't just admit that I hadn't used the flight ..

This ends up a very trivial explanation .. anyway ...

I decided to book a flight later this year but my tsa lock purchase on the q website had not recorded .. so a veeery helpful Amex op said no probs .. we will extend the booking time a week past your anniversary.
I said thanks , and can you switch me to someone to talk about the card fees... again .. very switched on .. she asked what was the problem etc etc.

I said well it's great earning tool for qff points , was really happy with the points deal for sign up , but year in and year I can't justify the cost.

Eventually get to talk to another very erudite and switched on lady , who had already been briefed , had all the account details available, and asked "leading" questions that I was able to answer in the required manner. ( not completely senile..still some functioning grey ... )

The outcome is that the card is now very cost effective........bingo

Summary .. It's not what you ask but how you ask .. telling them their product sucks is not the way to a positive outcome.
I suspect you also have to have something going for you as there are boxes to be ticked.
In our case, long membership , steady everyday private spend with some travel peaks , hnw , and a faultless on time payment record.
