Air France jet wreckage parts found

PARIS (AFP) - French investigators said Sunday they found parts of an Air France plane that crashed into the Atlantic while flying from Rio de Janeiro to Paris in June 2009, and hoped to locate the black boxes.

The plane went down roughly midway between Brazil and Senegal on June 1, 2009, killing all 228 people on board, in the deadliest crash in Air France's history.

That’s pretty big news, though,

Troadec said the parts of the wreckage that had been found consisted of "engines and certain elements of the wings".

I was under the impression the boxes weren’t anywhere near the wings..

So I guess at 11 tonight we can see the photos.

On Apr 3rd 2011 investigators of the BEA said, that in the last 24 hours debris has been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean floor which has been identified to belong to the crashed Airbus A330-200 registration F-GZCP. The debris was "relatively concentrated", investigators now believe they have located the actual main wreckage site. There is still no guarantee though that the flight data recorders will be found. More information will be released in due time.

Watching CNN, they say the debris is in an area 600 by 200 metres, with engines, wings, gear and a significant part of the fuselage, believed to be full of bodies. It was said such an area (600/200) isn’t that big for an incident like this, and suggests it didn’t break up before it hit the water. It’s located at a depth of 3900m.

It was hard to find this thread with such a strange name, but I note they’ve recovered one of the black boxes now, and are hoping for the second one containing audio in the next 10 days.

Hopefully we’ll have some interim results in the next few weeks on what data is still on them.
