hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

I applied before then and nominated aeroplan . Got gold status but not the bonus points . Wasn’t one supposed to receive bonus points as well ?

Gotta say we are both just a little confused with what next steps are with this card.

Due to my recentish retirement bAlt is the owner of this shiny new card. We already have the $4000 sitting in scheduled payments in sniip.

We have y/y+ flights booked with SQ to India Dec/Jan. No locked in international travel after that although Iceland/Greenland is looking pretty good for August 27.

Who should we assign the gold to? SQ? Maybe Air Canada?

We should have no issues with $48k spend per year so that will maintain the gold ongoing?

It just seems a little 'too good to be true'.

If you are looking to buy miles for trips Aeroplan is the best deal out there for atm. Also gets VA lounge access as does SQ

The deal is exactly as it says on the box!

Going for aeroplan will give you up to two years worth of gold… the remainder of the current year (the anniversary is always Dec), plus the full year after.

I’ll have to check with my friend who spent the $48k to see if the same applies on requalification.. in theory, you’d only need to spend the $48k every second year if that’s how it works.

Aeroplan gold also gets you almost instant access to the aeroplan call centre. Regular lines can be in excess of two hours. The advantage is that booking itineraries is a breeze, as is fixing any issues due to schedule changes, etc.

Brilliant!! Air Canada it is

Note you do have to pay the $499 annual fee in year two onwards. But that’s the same whichever airline you choose for gold.

You can also nominate a different airline for gold once every 12 months (provided you requalify).
Yep, understand that.

I'll most likely get rid of my Amex and find something else for QF point but then I suppose $450 yearly for a $450 credit is money for nothing.
