hsbc-star-alliance-card-art.pngWhy we like the HSBC Star Alliance credit card

Launched in 2022, the HSBC Star Alliance credit card is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. You'll earn Star Alliance Points which are transferable to a choice of seven Star Alliance member airlines at a time of your choosing. You can also earn Star Alliance Silver or Gold status just by spending on the card, with no flying required!

Once you qualify for the welcome offer and are fast tracked to Star Alliance Gold status with any of the seven participating carriers, you’ll soon be enjoying perks like airport priority lanes and lounge access when flying across the whole Star Alliance network. It is the largest airline alliance in the world with 25 member airlines, including Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, United and Turkish Airlines.

Please note that the welcome offer is not available to existing HSBC customers transferring from another HSBC credit card, or if you have previously held a HSBC Star Alliance credit card within the last 18 months. Refer to the full T&C’s for more information:

Although I note that the SQ page still doesn’t list the bonus points! (as opposed to the star alliance page)

There's discussion in the other thread on the specific SQ offer from Nov-Dec 2025:

Hi
I was just approved for my Star Alliance card and I have nominated Aeroplan as my airline on the Star Alliance website.

After I meet the minimum spend I will get gold status and 30k points. I have a few questions please.

Does Star Alliance Gold Status provide any benefits when flying Virgin Australia or Scoot?
When flying a Star Alliance airline, can one use the lounge on arrival?
Also when using Kriflyer miles for upgrades does Gold Status give any priority?

Thanks Peter

Once you have met the $4k spend you will be asked to nominate your carrier for star gold. Doesn’t matter if you have already done it, you’ll be asked to nominate at that point. You then wait 14 days.

Star alliance doesn’t give you benefits for flying Virgin… BUT… individual airlines have reciprocal arrangements. So Singapore, Air Canada and a couple others will give you lounge access and varying degrees of other benefits. You need to go to the Virgin Australia pages, and respective airline’s pages to see what your benefits will be.

Lounge access on arrival is not a star alliance benefit. Again, check out the star alliance page to see your benefits. https://www.staralliance.com/en/benefits-and-privileges

You really need to read through the relevant pages with the relevant airlines otherwise, if you don’t know of a particular benefit you could miss out. While AFF may mention some benefits here and there, the full suite is on each airline website.

For example with Air Canada you’ll get certain extra benefits which you can choose from. Well worth exploring.

Star gold on air canada won’t give you priority for Krisflyer upgrades.

Will Krisflyer star gold give priority on Krisflyer upgrades or when making redemption bookings?
