How were your items stolen from Airline Lounges

Even though I still do it, I'm very weary of leaving any belongings behind, especially in the busier airports, and even in lounges.

Especially if it is my bag, no matter how heavy it may be. I don't even want anyone to entertain the possibility that leaving my bag behind could be viewed as a security risk.

There does seem to be a lot of very trusting people out there particularly in domestic lounges. Me, I'm paranoid and usually cart it with me if I have to use the toilets or it's not in direct sight (or have someone I know well with me) particularly in the domestic QF lounges. Strangely enough though I have left my bag, but always take wallet and passort, to use the toilets in the QF international lounge in SYD. Maybe a better class of traveller?;)

Never ever o'seas...it's always cart the lot unless I can see it and am within striking distance!

I'm guilty of leaving bags and laptop on one of the tables at a QP to get food and drink; that being said I never leave my wallet or phone behind anywhere (not much of a comfort if the laptop gets stolen though I guess!)

I wonder whether these thieves are 'professionals' rather than flyers? I know the MEL dom lounge rarely checks BPs - it would be easy to slip in and out.

I think it's true that I wouldn't dream something would get stolen at the Qantas F lounge in MEL if i went to the bathroom for five minutes. Same for the j lounge - I ghuess my reasoning has always been that if you can afford the ticket (and have entry to the lounge) then you aren't going to be needing my laptop.

What is more concerning is then that certain staff at the QC seem to acknowledge theft is an issue (as in 'it has happened a few times in the last week' and yet there aren't prominent signs warning of this (or are there? I don't recall seeing them.)

That only seems to strengthen my case that QC should be taking some responsibility in these matters. If they know it is a problem do they then have a duty to tell you? (I bet you they would make it more well known if they had to shell out for a few missing laptoips and mobiles etc)

I am V trusting of the J and F lounges - I will walk away to get food/drinks/loo and leave everything sitting where it was - admitting that, my wallet stays where it was as well - in my back pocket. I always pocket my phone as well, not because I distrust my fellow travellers, but because it pisses me off when someone's phone sits there ringing whilst unattended, I don't want to put myself in this position.

QP - depending on where I am sitting (PER is the only QP I seem to use frequently) I will leave my gear where it is if I am using the loo or taking a wilderness trek for a drink :)!:) to the far end of the QP (I usually sit at the dragon end by the windows at the bench) if there is someone close - I usually just ask a neighbour to keep an eye out while I'm gone - it is little or no imposition to anyone and I am happy to recriprocate the favor to anyone at anytime.

I have never (touch wood) had anything stolen in a QP yet...

Mr!

I personally leave my computer there for all to see - I must admit, it's more from a laziness perspective becasue it just takes so damn long to shut down/boot up (i'd be back before it shut down!). Having said that, like munitalP I will pocket the phone for the same reason he does and my wallet is always in my bag. If it was crowded (but I have only once seen a DJ lounge crowded and that was CBR when i was there for over 4 hours) I would be more aware but generally in MEL or SYD when im there i find a lonely spot that is in vision of the bar and watch it occasionally...

I guess i also think that if they are in there they don't want my laptop... Silly i know but then again i am a fairly trusting person anyway

I guess I hav extremely lucky so far in lounges. I leave my laptop bag and carry-on bag at the table or the computer area to get a drink or go to the bathroom. Most of the time the lounges are relatively crowded and the bags are zipped up.

A hard and fast rule I have followed my entire life is wallet, keys, mobile phone do not leave my person in public. Not at work, not in lounges, not in friend's houses. Nowhere....

I've had someone go through my bag but when they've seen and felt what's in there they must reel back in disgust and fear.

It's all about risk managment. Would I leave a computer with 5 years of uni work alone? No. It amazes me how many computers with valuable info in them get stolen.

When I'm up for more booze, food or break I ask the people next to me to keep an eye on my stuff. "Its only full of cough" I tell 'em.
