I would like to upgrade to either premium economy or business using points. My ticket, however, is a sale fare, so not eligible for an upgrade. I have more than enough points that I could have booked a business class trip using points (i was trying to save them). Is there a way around this where I don't have to spend more money, or do I have to deal with it? Is there any chance, at the airport, they will allow me to upgrade? Help?

Qantas occasionally have a promo email that allows you to upgrade sale fares. I got one a couple of months back for an upcoming NZ trip. you may get lucky.

You could also cancel, re-book using the credit at the next fare level and then request the upgrade?
If you really want to travel in PE or J and have the points then look at a JASA as you will earn both the points and the SC. The upgrade lottery is rarely a good gamble. YMMV
