How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

Flew 4 sectors today and only on QF433 Syd-Mel was weighing taking place. This aircraft was the newer 737 with the push up overheads and I suspect that is the trigger.

No weighing LST-MEL and MEL-BNE today.
MEL-BNE was on Skippy. And one of the worst landings I have experienced. As we touched down we did a 10-15 degree lean to the left then the brakes applied hard-everyone leant forward.

Nah. We had things weighed on the other type of bin.

Last 4 sectors. Carry-on weighed on PER-BNE (not weighed on BNE-PER) and BNE-SYD-BNE. 3 out of the 4

Last night SYD-BNE weighted. The regular queue with a scale. I skipped to the priority queue when there was a gap and the attendant asked "can I just have feel of your bag?" and measured it by hand. 7.5 kg passed the sniff test.

An absolute zealot policing the premium security line at SYD this morning (no one checking the regular queue).

Massive attitude even with a poor girl who was 7.3kg. Wouldn't even let her transfer something to her handbag.

This is going to be extremely annoying if it become the norm...suspect a lot of savvy flyers will start to avoid the premium queue for the short regular one on the left of the terminal.

Did notice very few people in the lounge had wheely bags this morning.

Wouldn't even let her transfer something to her handbag.

Assuming this is QF and assuming the handbag was less than 7kg (most likely), wouldn't that then mean the zealot was wrong? QF allow 2 carry on pieces, each to 7kg so why couldn't she transfer 300g to the handbag, which would then comply?

I would have said-you can't stop me putting something in my other bag and just done it.In fact did that with JQ once though into a spare pocket. But many would be intimidated by the attitude of some of the enforcers.

Would've thought she'd be within her rights to, but as another poster flagged...potentially intimidated by the attitude of the staff member.

Sunday afternoon PER-SYD full A330 carry on was weighed. Warning issued as we lined up that they would weigh bags. Seemed to be targeting the priority line more than the general line. I knew I was over with my roll aboard so had packed in a spare laptop bag.

Monday night SYD-PER full A330. Flight attendant policing the priority queue at the entry. I asked her if they were weighing bags, she responded "No, this is an Airbus so we don't need to"

Consistently inconsistent!!

I think this will be good business for Samsonite...I finally decided to buy a 1.7kg Lite Shock Hardcase

When I bought my carryon it was the lightest available at the time. Has given me 13 years of good service so far. Thought the zip was going to fail, but that seems to have magically rectified itself. ;)

They used to weigh it at the top of the escalator in the BNE International terminal but a long time since we flew out of BNE.It was not the airline staff though.

And perhaps quite rightly too :) When QF says they are responding to 'passenger feedback' no doubt a lot of that comes from premium or priority pax. So let them have their bags weighed for business class and the first couple rows of economy, and the rest of us can go about business-as-usual down the back :)

Just wondering - on this attention to the priority lines and premium entry that we have seen both with the QF and the VA "crack down" on carry-on weight threads Is anyone else wondering what the reasoning is that staff have been instructed to focus on the more frequent flyer/higher status passengers rather than the general flying public? Or is it just a natural bias given the people on this particular forum are more likely to be flying and thus be in priority boarding lines and premium entries?

Seems a weird decision that if the issue is about safety (or OH&S issues about cabin crew) they would focus on everyone, all the time. Again if the issue is about a volumetric problem and resultant delays (i.e. not enough overhead space in narrowbodies full of pax) then again it would follow that they would be targeting either everyone, or targeting full narrowbody flights at the gate and not A330 flights.

I am assuming that QF and VA management have some sort of "end goal" or KPI or strategy that they may be trying to implement, and we have heard reports about CASA possibly being the source of this recent crackdown with CASA observers seen casually around airports more) but they haven't really been forward in telling the public what the goal is. The fact that both QF and VA both announced a similarly timed crackdown on hand luggage weights would imply that maybe there is a regulator campaign or regulatory effort that is targetting both QF and VA?

I think there are a few things that have happened that have lead to the crackdown. Here one from CASA

Cabin Safety Bulletin No. 8 - Carry-on baggage

And some quotes from that:

Preventing non-compliant hand luggage from entering an aircraft is an important safety role of ground and cabin staff.

...

a process for ensuring passenger compliance with operator provisioning around carry-on baggage size; weight and dimensions

...

how passengers will be prevented from bringing into the cabin baggage that for any reason cannot be stowed appropriately, including use of baggage test units/weight scales; and procedure for removal; tagging and transporting as checked luggage
