How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

I know from my travels 7kg was a little bit tight if you wanted to do an overnight bag or go away for a couple of days.
Back when AJ was CEO of Jetstar, he stated what most of us know - 7kg is too low! And promptly raised the JQ carry on weight to 10kg in 2009 (it has since been re-reduced by subsequent JQ managers).
It's a fare war

Why don't you get a backpack as the second bag, not only lighter, so you can put more into it, but would remove the circus of handling two wheeled bags.....

I have a backpack I just choose not to use it domestically and it was also stuffed in the second wheelie bag. Carrying x2 wheelie was a once off as I needed to get both back home. Come Sunday I will be back to my one bag routine.

Maybe they can enforce priority boarding at the same time as weighing the bags?

On my most recent flight the Priority Boarding queue was held up whilst the agent weighed and size-checked someone's bag from the priority queue. Of course the person protested this, saying they'd used that bag on hundreds of flights without a problem. Meanwhile, the general boarding queue breezed past as the agent on that queue didn't seem too fussed about checking bags.

There's a whole class of people whos aim is to limit what they take to a single bag, even for weeks of travel. You can see examples of this over at another website: OneBag - The Art of Minimalist Packing

I am aware of this site and there are other similar sites. I have been travelling for more years than I can remember and I am very OCD when it comes to Dom and Int travel. I am not so much of a single bag traveller just one who will not take anything that is not required.

I think people need to remember the reason to carry on is primarily to have what you need for the flight on hand.

Yes bags get delayed and go missing but that is very rare. I don't think it's fair to say "well I can't fit my clothes for 2 weeks along with the gifts for my 18 nieces in my carry on therefor it's wrong". The original intention was to have a book and jumper to keep you entertained and warm on the flight.

And again I'll state, how the heck can you not keep under 7kg?? My checked baggage for a month is almost never more than 9kg. Maybe 11 if I'm scuba-ing and skiing in the same trip.

A lot of carriers now charge for check-in baggage, so its not unreasonable for people to avoid this fee, and the culture spreads out from this.

The emegence of low cost carriers, has undoubtedly also had an affect on this behaviour.

That used to be the purpose. But I think that changed a long, long, time ago.

Not dealing with the baggage carousel is a big reason for me to be HLO. And the damage that the handlers cause to your checked luggage (usually just wear and tear but still). And being able, as a WP, to easily access Qantas air-side domestic lounges on arrival with HLO is also an important reason for me.

Easier international transits when on separate tickets since airlines don't tend to through-check the way they used to? Another important reason for me.

The list does go on...

Weighing just announced for our flight MEL - ADL. We now have three queues. One for those who think they are oversized now being joined by people who think it’s a queue. Now Qantas have flipped the side of priority boarding.

I'm a supporter of the crack down, but believe the limit should be 10kg. Yes, I had this view when I was still a weekly flying commuter.... thank god those days are over.

Weird website, hard to follow. Are we talking about hand luggage only? We need a suitcase for a 1 night stay on Gold Coast.

I travel with a 20-22kg suitcase regardless if it's 3 days travel or 4 weeks travel.

The one bag concept is about minimalism, so no, a single large suitcase doesn't count. Think 40L backpack as being the target to achieve.

Understood. Thanks. I'll stick to the suitcase for travel. It's still one bag right? ;)
