How to make enemies...! [by weighing carry-on]

I'd suggest in most cases that is not overflow of carry on luggage but simply someone placing their luggage above row 1 or 2 then sauntering to their seat at 26F.

I must admit that I didn’t realise that this was a behaviour....

But, on a trip a year or two back, on a 737 from Sydney to Melbourne, I watched some pax do just that. And then the people who had actually bought the business class seats were out of luck. I pointed out that a number of the bags belonged down the back. The CSM identified the bags that had no nearby owners, and removed them from the overhead. A PA was made to the effect that a number of bags were incorrectly loaded in the wrong class, and were about to be removed from the aircraft. I suspect that some of the owners had never moved so fast....
 
Similiar to an incident on an AA flight last year.The last pax in F was a pilot.No where for his bags.I had noticed a fellow stuff 2 carryons into the locker above the pilot's seat,told the FA who took those bags out and made a similiar announcement.double whammy for the perpetrator as now no overhead space and was forced to gate check the bags.

But at TSV yesterday they were weighing bags at the non premium checkin/bag drop lines and saw a couple of carryons checked in.But didn't happen at the premium line.Just as well as my carryon usually weighs 8-9Kg which is legal on JQ but not QF.As well my bag is smaller than at least 50% of carryons on my flights.
Those complaining of no overhead bin space are really complaining of carryon size and numbers rather than weight.

One of the FAs on yesterday's flight had her bag in the bin over row 9,I was in row 10,By the way she handled it i have no doubt that it was well over 7Kg.

My opinion is that QF should increase the carry on limit to 10 KG and then enforce the weight and size limits. This would stop the time-wasting of people trying to squeeze over-sized bags into the overheads and ensure there is space for everyone. Being tall, I have helped many people get their bags down and I'm sure some were close to 20 kg!
Agree - especially after the QF flight from Brisbane to Sydney last night. The size of the bags is the issue for me, as my Antler cabin bag can fit into the measuring frame and the bag is normally under 7kg. On the last couple of Air NZ Flights from Melbourne to Auckland, the Air NZ staff were patrolling the self-check in kiosks and making people put their cabin luggage on the scales. If it was more than 7kg it went in the hold - which was one of the times my bag was 7.5kg
I know there will be complaints from a few, but cheers from the many if they instituted a size limit. As the airline can include it into its rights of carriage, no one can complain about it, given prior warning.

The first time I realised this behaviour existed was when I boarded quite late and had to place my bag a few rows back over row 8 due to the bins over my seat in row 5 being full.

After landing, I let passengers from rows 5-8 go past and get off before me so I could make a dash back to grab my bag from row 8.

While I was waiting, someone who was sitting in row 7 or 8 walked up and grabbed their bag from above my row 5 overhead bin. His bag was above my seat (placed there before I boarded), and mine was put in the vacant spot above his seat.

Still to this day I can't figure out why he would have put his bag where he did. Unless his plan was to get off the plane before someone in row 5, because then I guess it worked.

Happens all the time on Qantas Link.

Its also a way to reduce the amount of cabin luggage and pressure on overhead locker space.

Primary though its a weight and balance issue .... which is a safety concern or so they say. I cant really see that gate agents taking bags off pax then contacting load control saying that they have 5 extra bags at 8 kilos each and load control telling them where to put them for trim purposes

The gate agents do call the ground staff to advise them of how many extra bags they need to load and then the pilot gets updated of the extra weight so they can take on more fuel/redistribute the fuel
 
Jetstar seemingly weighing / measuring at gate pretty regularly of late. Probably to stop people taking the p**s and adding a bit of revenue to the flight (easy money!)
Jetstar randomly select flights to weigh cabin baggage. Certain flights are always targeted and others are genuinely random. If you stick to the rules (especially on a LCC) you have nothing to worry about

Cabin crew get a different weight allowance to PAX for carryon bags, as there are certain things required to be taken on board as a part of the job

May I ask which flights are always targeted? What is it about certain flights that means the cabin baggage is always weighed?

Though up thread there was a post on health and safety where for a female the limit was supposed to be 7Kg and 10Kg for men.

No it’s not. JQ is also 7Kg. It used to be 10Kg but they changed a few years ago.

It’s really strange that the max bundle doesn’t include the extra allowance, which is more than double the cost of the flexibiz bundle.

Also not having a uniform weight limit is going to make it harder to police, as they’ll have to check your boarding pass as they weigh your bag. Although now, they have more incentive to weigh your bag to protect the extra revenue stream.
 
May I ask which flights are always targeted? What is it about certain flights that means the cabin baggage is always weighed?

I’ve seen ‘leisure routes’ heavily targeted like MEL->OOL and SYD->OOL for JQ.

For VA it’s more universal as they were hitting all people at premium check in points in BNE and SYD, some check in checking at other ports but in my experience didn’t seem to be route targeted.

Same same. Both are about convenience to the passenger - or inconvenience - as the case may be.

What actual evidence do you have of this, with the exception of a single report made on AFF a number of months ago?

Good luck on that for Jetstar. The reduced cost model they run is thin on staffing and services. To make a complex weight system work in uniformity with the cabin luggage is going to be very stressful for check-in staff.
