I'm sorry but is there no journalistic integrity left in the world?

While entertaining, that article contains so many lies portrayed as "facts" I don't know where to start.

Surely somebody should be overseeing this kind of stuff. Wish I could work in a job where I just make stuff up as I please and don't need to answer to anyone!

I want that $1,500 Y fare that crosses the world. That is, if that is even remotely possible (I have my doubts on this one).

Definitely a lot of journalistic BS there, and completely misunderstanding the context.

Not a lot of travel hacking as such from the man in question - just a lot of credit card applications. They have tons of points attached to them up the wazoo in the USA, and many bloggers hawk these on their sites with referral commissions. (Not that it matters - the main thing is people who apply for them can get the points).

We don't have as many here and certainly not in the lucrative programmes like AA and UA. You can get signup bonuses for QF and others here but YQ will push up the costs (well beyond $500!).

Also, I did read the man's blog really quickly, but did he book that entire RTW in Y? Whilst I'd probably revel in giving such a schedule a crack myself, I'm sure there are others here who would baulk or be horrified.

That would probably be the taxes and ignores the value of the points.

So the article says that is the cash fare when in fact it is the taxes with appropriate points? Yep, research epic fail.

Now suppose people are going to try and find this elusive $1500 round the world fare. I do know that there are certain round the world fares in Y which retail for just under $2000 (slightly unusual products, like QF and LH or the like, and booking class unknown); I'm not sure if that is subject to taxes or not, but you can get them at many travel agencies. Certainly, I haven't seen one go for $1500, not even as a base price. Happy to be wrong on that.

I note that News.com.au doesn't put a name to the article at all.

Probably so we (yes, us) can't find out who made up the tripe so we can have them tied to a rail carriage and dragged for a few miles.

I think that can be arranged for somewhere between SYD and CBR in December ;)

"You can also earn extra points if you get a home loan with the Macquarie Bank or when you fly with Qantas or its partners (an around-the-world trip between Sydney, Singapore, London and Los Angeles will earn you about 170,000 points)."

How on earth do that calculate a 170k earning?

No idea ... A 20 segment DONE4 I booked in 2005 earned me ~125k ... and even that is no longer possible.

Exactly. And there example is simply SYD-SIN-LHR-LAX-SIN, only one flight of which has Qantas First. By my calculations, such a trip would get even a Platinum flyer with bonuses, not more than about 35k.

They should have posted article on AFF first for proof reading.

they must have got confused between earning and award redemption cost
