How to check whether adding a stopover to a discount fare is possible

Hi all!

I've started browsing for discounted J fares to Europe for early next year using Google Flights to get a high level indication, and yesterday found one which seemed a reasonable deal; it was SG via SIN to an airport in Scandinavia which I've since forgotten and then SAS from there to Barcelona.

The return flight had a silly long wait at said Scandinavian airport, so I started trying to find the fare in order to see whether I could string-together a "multi city" flight which allowed us a few days in ... whatever Scandinavian city it was.

However I couldn't find that Sydney-to-Scandinavian-city flight on either Singapore Airlines or SAS's sites, let alone going on to Barcelona.

I'm sure this question has been asked a billionty times before in different ways, but how do people go about finding those flights?
Is this where you just go to a travel agent?

Yes TA would be necessary for these types of things especially if its across multiple airlines. If its still on one airline, it might be possible to use multi city tools, but often they don't price the same as well.

It may also be a married flight in which case you're out of luck with a stopover as the price is set for specifically city A-city B -city C transiting on specific flights only.

It's called trial and error. Why most people view points collector as a hobby job that doesn't pay well in returns

Have you tried ITA Matrix and forcing the transit via said Scandinavian airport. Then play around with multi-city to see how the price varies or not.

I can’t speak for SQ, but I do know some airlines multi-city tools produce the goods but some do need that ITA search info to find the cheap combos eg JL.
