Hi all, I was wondering if anyone knew a way to check the surcharge/taxes to pay for a flight from Manchester, UK to Brisbane, Australia? I have just under the required number of miles so have to top up if I wanted to book it but wanted to know how much the extra charges would be before I buy more miles, in case it wasn't worth it.

I also spotted a whole 1-2 weeks of classic rewards seats last night on this route for the following 2 weeks which have now all disappeared. Is this quite common within such a short time frame? I didn't think it was a popular route. Is it likely that they could have more seats coming up last minute (is it worth checking every day to see if anything new comes up?).

Sorry I realise they are very newbie questions!

Thank you

What class and which airline?
Have you got any dates in mind?

Yes on Qantas (although I believe they are using emirates airline)
I saw some between 24-27th January which was when I was planning to go but they have disappeared.
I was looking at one way flights. Came across somewhere on Qantas which indicated the tax and charges might be £500-600 + miles! Seems to be almost the same price as a ticket!

You mentioned that you didn’t think UK to Australia was a popular route. I have to dispel that.

It definitely is a high demand route, and never more so than those exact travel dates.

That’s the end of the Australian summer holidays. Families travelling overseas all want to get back to AU for the start of school, return to work etc.

How flexible are you with dates?

I also noticed the disappearance overnight of Emirates awards Europe-Australia. Available during this past week on several days and routes, Y and J, but this morning there is nothing at all in Y or J.

Re the taxes and carrier charges on Emirates, this article should help.

Ah ok flexible but I need to be back by february. I'm British so the australia school dates still confuse me! Everyone is back to school in the UK but i didn't realise that's not the case in Aus!

That's great thank you. It says London - Sydney tax for economy is $383 though and $821 for business but in the case they described it was a lot more >$1000 for business so seems like it is variable? I got the impression it would be about $1000 one way

It will be more expensive London-Sydney due to the UK Air Passenger Duty (APD.) Last week I priced an award with ~2/3 of the flights in J and ~1/3 in Y at ~$1,500.

Oh i see. So it would be better using them from Australia to UK would there be less APD? What do you mean by J and Y? As in the award seats came up as $1500 for one way economy with the airmiles also? Thank you

APD is charged for flight travel departing the UK - there is a rate for Y (Economy) that is half the rate for "higher" cabin classes sich as J (Business).

J = business class, Y = economy class (shorthand for those classes in general, not the actual fare class)

Are you saying that you were getting a quote of $1500 for taxes and carrier charges for an economy award, one-way? Because that is way over the mark. If I could actually find an Emirates economy award on that route, I would check for you. Do you have a date with availability?

As you don't pay the UK APD flying Australia to London, the taxes and charges should be less than on the return.
