How often do you see other aircraft in flight?

LOTFAP certainly has the traffic to make the incidence fairly high, couple of times I have seen passing traffic on the LAS-LAX trips. Airports certainly also help increase the concentration of aircraft in the air, I remember being in the jump seat on a UA 747 as number 10 in the line up for approach to LAX, and 10 days later in the jumpseat of a Cactus (HP) 737 as number 12 on a visual approach to LAX!

I was in the jump seat on a 747 from AKL to MEL and saw one pass underneath us going the other way. Awesome sight! Was also lucky enough to sit on the flight deck landing into LHR, headset and all! The radio work was full on, and I am glad it wasn't me on the mic!!

I haven't seen any over Europe - always seems to be covered in cloud when I'm there. Over the US, while not what you'd call a lot, I have seen quite a few.

I was surprised how many other planes I saw while over the US and especially on AA33 from JFK->LAX.

An oncoming Continental 737 went by so close and so near our height that it must have been quite a sight from the coughpit.

On my JFK to LAX AA flight there was a competing UA flight a good 3ks away the whole time!

In europe there was flights going over and under us all the time.

About 1 hour south of Darwin heading to Adelaide, got the biggest fright of my life when Tiger metal passed us heading in the other direction.

About 1,000 feet below, just off to the side,

There one second gone the next,

An amazing example of speed with the ground in the background

Not very often but I am also excluding time spent circling airports, take off, landing etc.

It is probably more to do with the fact that I am mainly sitting in aisle seats with a preference for centre aisle.

Couple of times out of Perth in the QF a330 have overtaken a DJ 737 puttering alongside - once even the pilot called it out and made a pretty funny joke about us winning the race!

I have had this occur quite often, even back when they flew the 743's on the red eye, if looking out the window you would quite often watch a smaller plane being overtaken.

Longest viewing of another flight we had was during a PMO-STN flight. Lasted well over half an hour & then they disappeared near Paris.

Longest viewing I had was actually three aircraft, with a BA 747 above and ahead and a QF 767 below our QF747, all heading to SIN, lasted for two hours or so past Darwin.

Once upon arrival towards LAX I counted 6 other aircraft all visible at the same time, most stacked up ahead landing before us, just before we made a left turn to join the queue.
