How much is Silver worth?

$450? Almost certainly not.
If you are flying Cathay, you get access to exit row seats for free which is valuable.

I'll second that. My sister fell over the Silver earn line last year and has now booked herself return LHR from BNE and has picked up extra leg room or emergency exit row seats for all 4 flights which otherwise are sold for a pretty penny.
That combined with more baggage allowance (which she will certainly use) made the more creative routing and slightly higher spend last year certainly worth her effort.

You may want to check that. I dont think OW Ruby members get extra luggage.
Frequent Flyer Benefits | Oneworld - Cathay Pacific
Check the benefits table.

CX give their own MPC Silver members 10KG more Marco Polo Club Benefits - Cathay Pacific
But based on how i read the rules QF PS members would not get this.

Ive always found it interesting comparing CX vs QF benefits for PS.
Lounge access, priority boarding, priority luggage.

Thanks all. At this stage I'm not going ahead with it. I've got no prospect of attaining Gold in the next year. I rarely use the extra baggage apart from when I was moving, and that is all done for the moment. I have no problem accumulating points, although a lot of that was years ago when I was travelling more. I'm also reconsidering the US trip at the moment for other reasons.

For those that asked, I'm in remote WA and the only flights from here are to Perth (normal price $300+ one way discount economy). I will be going to Perth in April (already included in the calculation) but there are no cheap options from there during the school holidays. I'm currently working in a school, so the timing is non-negotiable. My Perth flight will be reimbursed by Govt, so there's no option to take a more expensive flight there either.

I will use my points towards a RTW ticket in the summer holiday instead. :)

Hi jahane, try ringing Qantas Frequent Flyer customer service department, I rang earlier this year and was honored silver as I was sitting on my 290 SC and also 10 SC short. The CSR lady I spoke to was very nice and she even called back the 2nd day to confirm that I have been bumped to Silver. If you have upcoming trips with Qantas, it is worth to have silver status (lounge access and extra points). Don't be shy and ask Qantas, I am sure they can do the same for you.

Definitely worth a call or an email, if you don't ask you don't get. Good luck

would make requalifying easier next year (250 instead of 300?) which you could make with your planned trips, more points when flying, and you get a free lounge pass or two, some ability to select seats, and a rung up from Bronze when upgrade requests are processed. Up to you to assess if it's worth it ... personally I'd try to go for it to make requal easier the following year, but $450 for 20SC, not sure.

There is also the lure of cabin bonus points that accrue to silver status if the program is QF

I called up earlier this year when I was 15SC short of Gold and was offered another year of Gold. Try your luck.

This is genius! I wonder what the lower threshold might be for this to work or if there is written protocol on this, or more just which telephone operator you get on the day!

Whilst it may seem genius to you, it is far from guaranteed. I wouldn't get your hopes up too high with any form of expectation.

As with all these anecdotal unwritten benefits, expectations only lead to disappointment.
(Disappointment leads to hate, hate leads to ssssuffferrrrinngggg.)

I have had this happen - the justification from QF was that I had significant travel and I was asked to outline my travel plans for the forthcoming year. Unfortunately this only worked once and after that, back to PS
