So I am a Platinum Velocity member, Which I do quite enjoy.
I need to head to the USA for a expo in late January, So ive started to look at flights.

I looked through my AMEX travel, and for $3,176.20 I can fly direct in Premium Melbourne to LAX on VA, which isnt the best price but I have paid more.
But then I noticed.
Singapore Airlines, for $3,101.93 ($75less, no big deal) I can fly Via changi in Premium, Which would obviously get me some more SC.
I have zero issues with flying and stop overs.

Question is, Would you do it? and how far have you detoured for SC?

Detoured? Some folks have flown across the pacific for a burger and come straight back.
I’ve personally flown 3 or 4 connections to get to my destination and even then have been looking for an extra segment to maximise earn.

We flew Sydney>LA>Atlanta>Santiago (VA bookings) then Easter Island, all J. There were other/faster options but we took it as an adventure and an excuse to go to Nashville & Atlanta on the way back. The immigration guy at LAX was a bit confused as we were only in the country for a few hours.

Was able to gift VA Platinum after that trip

Syd/HK/Bnkk to Oman and finally to Amman, Jordan and return in J. Big swag of QF SC's and small $$ difference compared to direct Syd/Dubai but gee it was the long way around.. Return was interesting: neighbouring seat kept his jacket on the whole trip - turns out he was air ecurity. I really didn't want to know what he was carrying under the jacket.

If you need the SC's then its a no brainer, go with SQ.
BUT, being WP, and on a Y+ fare, id be aiming to upgrade to J on VA !

Not sure why they were confused, all INT to INT connections in the US require immigration clearance. Must happen all the time.

Back on topic though, in premium cabin then extra connections and status credits can make the trip fun. Obviously not the same in Y.

I often fly to CMB using points to then access cheap business fares to my actual destination. Although I need to stop doing that - the detour is using up too much of my annual leave.:p

SQ can be quite picky.
There were some flights, that I booked with VA and NZ, putting in my SQ KF# (my flights weren't codeshares, yours probably will be, so you probably ill earn VFF points and VFF SC), in my case the points and SC didn't appear.
Personally, I would fly VA direct from MEL, and yes, I did see the fare was cheaper with SQ, but if SC is important, go VA.
Imagine if you flew the SQ flight, only to find that the fare you paid, while it got you WP benefits for the flight itself, wasn't eligible for VFF SC earnings, what then.
I really thought, when I put in my VFF # and on a separate booking, my SQ KF # to fly NZ, that I would collect points and SC, but nope.
If you do want to fly via SIN, make sure the subclass of premY does earns, ie, check and double check the fare class, and that the codeshare between VFF and SQ will allow SC earnings.
Keep the etix too, so its easier to do the retro claim if the points don't appear.

But.......VA Premium is a better all round product IMHO so that would make up my mind. Plus the much quicker flight.

I was playing around with some dates the other day for a trip to the US and SYD-LAX one way in J on VA was over $6k but one of the OTA’s had a fare that went ADL-MEL-AKL-SYD-LAX for $3400 on VA. I clicked on it and it seemed legit but I’m always wary about these OTA’s so didn’t try to book it. Fare was gone a couple of days later so possibly a mistake fare?

Ive flown VA Premium several times, no complaints at all
Delta Premium was AMAZING

Singapore airlines Premium, was sub par i must say, Ive flown it to and from London and each time i really wish i was in busyiness as thePremium was yea..... Not bad

Its a hard choice, im happy to do what ever stop overs, no real issue at all. but as someone mentioned before the VA Premium is much MUCH better.

For VA status credits? I’d detour down the road to coles for an extra few via flybuys (maybe). But then I earn less than 100 per year anyway. :(

I have booked a VA AKL-MEL-BNE flight in J as an alternative to China Airlines J AKL-BNE - similar price. Foregoing the CI flatbed and probably better service for a requalification to VA Silver (thanks to family pooling).

I had to get home to CNS from BNE one time. Back in 2013 they were offering Status Credits with reward bookings, so I had to fly BNE-SYD-ADL, then ADL-MEL-BNE-CNS in the one day to get home. I'm not sure I understand the question ;):D

In years past, VA fares ex-NZ were often cheaper to USA than direct from Oz-USA, so it was probably a legitimate fare. Just go onto the VA NZ website and do the search from AKL-LAX to compare.

im going melb - bris to la to vegas and back again just cause i can all in j and will be using plat upgrades for the domestic just cause i can lol, its all sectors and extra points and sc
