I found this site by simply googling. I've registered and had a look around the site but can't find an FAQ area.

This is probably a stupid question and also probably too general but how does the system all work?

For example, how many points would be needed for a flight from Melbourne to say Townsville and which airlines would be available?

And which would be the best and cheapest card to get.

I've already got a Westpac Gold MasterCard but the only way that Westpac seems to be able to do the frequent flyer thing is to link it to an American Express card and I bauk at paying $150 a year for a card that I can do without. Especially as so few places take the AA card.

Any help with these questions and where to go for similar qestions and answers would be appreciated.

This forum operates as a community of frequent flyers who share information and experience about using various Frequent Flyer programs that are available. It does not provide any FF schemes itself.

Most people who use this site are Frequent Flyers and want to get the most out of their existing frequent flyer program memberships. Being Australian-focused, most people are likely to be members of the Australian-based frequent flyer programs such as Qantas Frequent Flyer and Virgin Blue's Velocity.

For details on those programs and how to earn points and how many points are required for award flights, please refer to their own web sites.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Welcome bobmac to Australian Frequent Flyer. I have the Westpac Amex card, and find that about 80% of my spend is on the Amex, and the remainder on the supplementary Visa card provided by Westpac (I think now they provide a supplementary Mastercard).

Regarding the $150/year, my rough rule of thumb is that if you spend more than $15,000 p.a. you should be able to recoup that $150 (at least) in Altitude points you can redeem for Qantas Frequent Flyer points (although signing up to QFF is a once off charge of around $85). This number of points should allow you to get fares worth more than $150.

However Westpac is not the only option, if you have time to kill and want to find out more I suggest a good starting point are the credit card forums on this site!
