Perth to NYC on a DSC run in J does get you 1440 status credits but last time we did it we missed the points upgrade to First on the return and that A380 business class seat is quite uncomfortable. Of course that is a first world problem.
If you save a couple of thousand booking under a sale fare, you can easily make up the missed SCs with AA DOM F flights. I was getting them for around $3/SC last year. I guess as long as you have the time.
We booked BNE-SYD-SFO during DSC. Me paid, partner points. $7500 for me. Since then multiple sales down around 5300. Was I annoyed? Fleetingly yes. It is what it is.
For me, that's a "cancel, get refund, rebook at cheaper price" trigger -- even with a $600 cancel/refund penalty. I value the $1600 difference more than the DSC.
Then on the rebook, search and price a cheaper fare using skyscanner and claim for Qantas Price Promise.
