Property: Mercure Sydney (at Railway Square). We like this location, 10 minutes from domestic airport station then 10 minutes walk through the Devonshire street tunnel, crossing no roads. 5 minutes walk to excellent dining experience in
Kensington Street Chippendale with its faux hawker stall spice alley, just off Broadway.
Room booked: Deluxe City View Room, 1 King Sized Bed, for 2. Corner rooms have views over railway square, couch and comfy chair as well as a work chair and desk. My bugbear is rooms for 2 which have only one comfy chair.
Status: ALL Platinum
Room upgraded/type: No (for the second time). There aren’t many rooms of this type (second to top category) or the next one up, so booking a more basic room your upgrade chances are better. Might try that next time.
Rate: ALL stay longer and save, which I think came with double points. Among Accor hotels in central SYD this one is usually well priced.
Free internet: Yes it was fine
Welcome drink: Yes, bottled water in room and 2x drink voucher at check-in
Early check in/late out: Didn’t need to try either, but unlikely to be a drama.
Welcome gift: Two half bottles of SSB and a cheese platter. The no upgrade consolation prize has been generally good.
Service: A nice handwritten card in room with a duty manager mobile number, always appreciated. Staff are consistently good, some hotels have a nice vibe and generally this is one.
Executive lounge: No such animal.
Free Parking: didn’t try, but they have their own garage and suspect no issue with this.
Free Breakfast: Yes, but paid for cappuccino which was free last time. Buffet has the basic menu, not much better than QF J lounge.
Dinner: The restaurant hasn’t been open for dinner since COVID, but its booking app suggests it’s reopening on Frday and Saturday nights from September. Menu is limited but nice pub food. Same food available from Eve Bar, which is a bit meh, and room service.
Crediting points: never had an issue in the past.
Can’t think of any reason not to keep coming here.
