How did you become a Qantas Frequent Flyer

May I ask (and feel free to be vague) what kind of work you do, for those who have extensive work travel?

Im well aware of the pitfalls of business trips (my previous role required extensive driving within the state) but after careful soul searching over the past few months have come to the realisation I'd quite like business trips requiring flying (and not just for FF points!)

Im currently in somewhat of the corporate health field, so the only way I can picture this happening is scoring a job such as a return to work coordinator with a national company with many sites.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I joined in 1995 after doing a few work trips and realizing the potential benefits of free alcohol! Fortunately the organization I worked for had just moved their work travel arrangements from Ansett to Qantas. Took me until 1999 to get WP which I held for 9 years before deciding to cut back on work travel (where possible) due to 2 small kids.

Having got LTG Earlier this year I now need a new focus, other than saving points for J overseas trips with the family.

I can't justify spending extra personal money (or time) to maintain WP but a small part of me does miss the extra status and the perceived exclusivity of veering away from the regular lounge into the uber-lounge...

Not sure the head line article is correct in saying status credits are given for award bookings using points as I have never been given any and
when using points to upgrade from Economy I still only get the credits for Economy.

In my view it is not worth paying extra or flying for the sake of getting up the tier. I have gained and lost Silver, last year needed 2 x UK trips (1 with BA in Premium Economy) and 1 x domestic to get there. If you chose a Sale ticket you get nothing, Readt DEal ia the lowest priced ticket to give you Credits then Flexi and fully Flexible will give you more.

You get what you pay for and I would be intersted if anyone has a short cut method!!

Cheers

Classic Qantas FF awards do not earn points or status credits.

Any Seat awards do - and have for well over a year. Some cost little more than the classic points level.

Welcome to AFF!

If you want to earn points you need to book your award ticket as an Any Seat Award (some very interesting threads about this)

and when using points to upgrade from Economy I still only get the credits for Economy.

correct as that is the class you paid for

You do get points and status credits on sale fares. A PER-SIN-LHR-SIN-PER with Premium Economy on the SIN-LHR-SIN flights should earn you 210 Statuc Credits, to get Silver you need 300 and 250 to retain. There are lots of tricks on here to boost your FF level (like why fly direct when you can connect, JASA, ...) but as always it is you who has to decide what level you want/need

Have fun learning the tricks!

Most of my flying is for work to either Africa or the Middle East (although some of you probably don't regard what I do as being "work":D), I joined QFF a few years ago, picked up a reasonable amount of SC's each year flying to Joburg several times a year, accumulated a lot of miles that way too but I didn't really chase status or care what colour I ended up each year, nor did I bother going into the QP as I usually just head straight for the gate. Made WP last year, which is useful for the extra baggage allowances, will probably do enough with them to retain it even though these days a lot of my work flying is on Emirates due to much better connections and a wider network in Africa and the Middle East, plus a couple of trips to London and a couple to the U.S., I'm averaging 12-15 long haul trips a year which gets tiring, looking forward to the Qantas/Emirates tie up as I will be then be able to have all of my domestic and international flying in one program - once we get more details I will decide which program I go with.

I may accussed of making this post just to bring up my "ton" after many years here! But it is a great place to pick up the tricks of the trade. I have never got much past silver but have been a qff since day one , having transferred from TAA flight deck to qantas club last cebtury. Been a paid QC member since 1989. Is there a gold watch coming my way in 2014 ?

It seems to me I've been around for ages and I've just been a QF member since 2006. You sir, should at least be awarded a nice set of steak knives!
Well done TonyD! :)

SC are very mucgh attached to the price you are willing to pay for flights. eg discount economy Syd - Melb =10 flexible = 20 and so on. Do your home work as sometimes if you get within a 100 or staus credit points of gold membership buying a more expensive couple of flights has sinficant dividends. Ref check the status benefits and place a value on them if you were to purchase them with your $ ie Qantas Club membership I value at at $ 20 per visit I fly about 70 times year so value approx $1,400 per annum, other benfits such as priority check in and dedicated security check in are big for me when I travel as much as I do so this has a high $ value for me. It is worth doing the sums and if you get within an obtainable number of SC in a year, go through the excerise of putting a $ value on the benefits and then select your ticket purchase accordingly to attract the higher SC points.

Joined then TAA Flight Deck Club on 11 Sep 1986 with a 4 digit number 0008xx_.

Before the airline introduced Flight Deck Club they used to have VIP Lounges but can't remember how pax actually qualified for access to that lounge.

If you are going to take 70 QF flights per year, I'm sure QP membership would be the least of your concerns.

This is a rather personal follow on, so be as general or vague as you like, but what sort of earning capacity/lifestyle do a lot of you have? I get the impression a number of you are either single or part of a couple without children - not all, but a number. It also seems one would have to have a large disposable income to afford to fly regularly; although my husband earns over $140k, we also have lots of expenses (which are now earning us points!) which mean that saving up for any o/s flights, even for the two of us, seems out of reach at the moment. We also don't have much interest in travelling to Asia, which I suppose is the cheapest international destination excepting NZ, so that also means any international flight we're looking at $3k plus (on a good day!) for the pair of us.

Of course, with me looking hard at finances and my husband being very pro-travelling (when we have the time and money), this may change soon, but I'm curious as to the situations most of you come from. Again, if it's too personal, feel free to be vague, as in "I earn a good wage" or "I'm very frugal" or whatever. I'm all for learning!

Once again income size is a subjective thing.
Many people live full and interesting lives without earning 7 figure salaries.

All my flying is self funded, having said that I am also self employed, so no high paying third party in my life.
As for life style, nothing flash here,
I do however enjoy good wine, good food and generally speaking have a good life, especially when compared to the alternative. However being self employed in tough times brings a whole new set of stress's, so it's a bit harder to maintain the status I have worked hard to achieve.
I am not even vaguely interested in flying with a LCC, I don't see the point, I am not a fan of travelling in Y , and will avoid it if possible, however short haul Dom is bearable.....Just!
I don't need to travel in F, but will do it at least once as a bucket list item. J is fine for me .
I like the fringe benefits that status brings, and thanks to tips from this site I am now WP for the first time .

It is I, Leclerc !
