No doubt the answer is here somewhere, but I couldn't think of clever keywords for the search.

When booking QF flights, how can you tell, prior to paying, what fare you are booking, so as to avoid a non-upgradeable (E,N,O,Q,X) fares? Given there are upgrades from 'discount economy' other than those, how can you ensure you book the cheapest upgradeable fare?

TIA

There are 2 ways to tell if a fare is upgradable. Firstly using the qantas method, click on the fare type in the column heading, in the pop up under "Qantas Frequency Flyer" it tells you if it is upgradable or not.

The other method will tell you the exact fare class. On the review your flights page when doing your booking, select View - Source in your web browser, or similar. Then next search for "&classes" next to that it shows the fare class of the segments in order. No doubt someone will link a better explanation of this method shortly
