Hover boards....

Lithium batteries are inherently dangerous, or at the least risky, yet airlines are quite happy to fly the 787 with its large Lithium battery packs directly under the coughpit.
There are many types / variations of Lithium batteries - some are inherently safe - others less so - others extremely suspect to spontaneous combustion. We have been importing electric bicycles with Lithium batteries for 10 years now - never a fire - we did have a trial shipment of a new type Lithium battery catch fire in transit from manufacturers warehouse to our warehouse in NKG some years back - needless to say we did not source any more of those.

But going OT here and plenty info available on web ew Lithium batteries if you want to search.

Apparently they now consider them to be safe, for they've now installed a tube, a chimney, to vent any smoke if they catch fire to the outside.

Well, they've also encased them in a stainless steel box, from which they supposedly can't burn their way out. Time will tell I guess, but AB decided to stick with a RAT on the 350.....

Looks like Russell Crowe may need a private jet to fly with his Hover board over here...

As an aside, I can't believe there are those siding with Russell Crowe here...

So big Russ thought VA (and presumably QF) should have personally notified him? If he boycotts all airlines who ban hoverboards, he'll lose kilos with all the walking (boarding?) he'll have to do. Honestly, it's idiotic tweets like those that puts the W in WP!

Oh yes the videos show how easy it is to break bones.

Its not called TWITter for nothing.

I see these overtaking scooters in accidents in Bali
TBH been here 9 days and have not spotted one scooter board - gazillions of scooters still though.

Why is it people leave their brains at home when they go on holiday - everywhere you see these young people riding scooters in singlets and shorts and thongs - no helmets - I just do not get it.

When in Rome I guess...

(They're nuts though. Can't understand it.)

I see in the news this morning (well loose description of what it's supposed to be, I know), that good old Mr Crowe is continuing his tweets about VA. One must surely assume this guy has mental issues or has trouble digesting whatever it is he may be eating/drinking? Rather than just letting it go he's continuing to make himself look stupid. Also stating that despite now knowing the issues of the battery packs, he chose deliberately to fly his family with the said hover boards as originally intended! After his telephone hurling episode directed at a poor hotel staffer, the world has known he has problems, but his problems now seem to include placing innocent travellers in harms way. He tweets that his hover board batteries are fine because Boeing 787s have lithium batteries. Despite the fact there are different types of Lithium batteries, Boeing have invested a considerable amount of money in trying to ensure the batteries they use do not catch fire and that was underpinned by a number of fires directly contributed to those batteries along with a grounding of the fleet.........I wonder if Russ' hover board manufacturer has invested the same amount to ensure their batteries don't catch fire.

If I were a VA exec, I'd publically ban Mr Crowe from the VA fleet due to his reckless nature of placing both his family and other pax at risk.

Define Dangerous. After all, some of these brands carry CE markings and the like. Some have fuse and manual breaker switches (but probably not most of the cheapies). Are skateboards also banned? Looking at crime numbers people being king hit with fists is more likely than being donged with a skateboard or umbrella.

So they are dangerous, even though not one has ever caught fire - sort of like iphones through the post, and all the gazillions of laptops taken aboard. - no evidence behind the assumption. Plus all batteries have internal thermal fuses - well should have anyway. Sort of like umbrellas - they could be used to rob and stab and dangerous in the cabin. I am not sure how many people have been attacked by umbrellas. And I am pretty certain electric wheelchairs go into the hold. And probably have a bigger battery. I suppose, like guns, the gun people could allow 'safed' hoverboards aboard.

Breaking down outrageous fears, a bigger battery is not needed. Bigger batteries are harder to flush down the toilet. Those scatter scanners should be able to tell the difference between wet acid cell and lithium.

I suspect the real reason is some MIGHT be used to conceal something bad - but I do not know the x ray profile. But water is already identifiable = yet water is you know, dangerous too.

More likely airports don't want kids doing wheelies or zooming at top speed to the gates, or seeing pax get off and hovering past the rip-off transport area, and catching public transport off the airport premises. I can imagine a drunk pax crashing into the duty free area. In fact business people zooming past the duty free shops not buying anything would be a financial danger.

Airlines don't want lots of 6kg or more things sucking down fuel and increasing takeoff weight. Airports don't want tricky things to slow down security theatre- strollers are bad enough.

Just to spoil patents, if hover boards had crude altitude/pressure switches, that could be a fourth protection. I look forward to someone getting airline approved hover boards certified.

I assume you're talking about Hoverboards here as you're posting in this thread. Plenty of fires have occurred. https://www.google.com/search?hl=en&gl=uk&tbm=nws&authuser=0&q=hoverboard+fire

ethernet these are the most dangerous Lithium powered devices produced - there are literally thousands and thousands of questionable manufactures producing these - lord knows the source of the batteries - we get dozens and dozens of emails daily from suppliers we have never heard of trying to sell us these products - I would not touch them with a 50ft pole.

The offer prices for complete units are substantially lower than what we would need to pay for a reputable battery alone - many tears to be shed here.

Cynicism aside, you must have your head in the sand to suggest that the ban is not aircraft safety related.

Not one has caught fire? You may want to check that. Google Rex and iPhone, that could have been nasty that one. Check the two cargo flights that had Li Ion battery fires and the outcomes.

Sorry but get the tinfoil hat off...

I guess when one compares the battery units in a 787 to those in a dodgy Chinese made "hover board", one must think that there is a slight difference in the quality of product
