Hi there all!

Can some one please give me some advice about hotels near Athens airport?

My wife and I need to overnight in Athens because we have an early morning flight to Thira and we really dont want to taxis to Athens or the surrounding suburbs.

Preferably we would like a hotel near the airport but the only one i have found so far is the Sofitel which is quoting us AUD $350 for one night....this is ridiculous!

Any one out there in the AFF comunity have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

Josko

I was there recently and the only choice at the airport is the Sofitel. Yes very expensive.

You can also try the newly opened Holiday Inn in Attica Avenue which is around 10 minutes away. They do provide a shuttle bus but not sure if it is free or how often it operates. Standard rooms are priced at ~€120.

If you not happy with any of these choices then your best bet would be to stay in the areas of Voula or Vouliagmeni which are on the outskirts of Athens but still around 30 minutes from the airport. The taxi should cost ~€25 coming from the airport and ~€15 going to the airport early in the morning. Plaza Vouliagmeni Hotel is a good 4 star hotel and around the same price as the new Holiday Inn.

Sounds like Greece = Expensive
I would have thought after the games that shall not be mentioned (since not as good as Sydney 2000) there would have been a lot of hotels, i guess they never built any, much like anything else... or else they were not finished in time and now we pay the high prices to make there money back

Not quite right Evan. On the contrary Greece is very cheap compared to the rest of Europe. I don't know what budget josko is working on but there are many 2-3 star hotels in Athens around €50-70/night.

Agreed that Athens airport does not have many hotels nearby but the airport is not close to the city. It is not a transit airport, like LHR or FRA, except for people visiting the islands.

Picture Sydney Airport at Emu Plains or Luddenham and then tell me many how many hotels are nearby. I can only imagine a couple of expensive brand name hotels as the demand would be low.

I stayed in a wonderful little hotel in Alexandria, not that Alexandria, that cost $40 Euro/night. It would probably rate only a 2 star compared to most places but it had everything I wanted, clean rooms, TV, working fridge, and a bathroom. Yet the same type of hotel by the beach in Akrata in Peloponnesos is €80/night. My friend goes to Santorini quiet a lot and rents twin rooms in a house for €80/night. The lady that owns the house comes and picks them up in her car from the sea port or airport.

Greece has something for everyone but it is not expensive. You just need to know where to look and be prepared to accept comfort over luxury and you will have a great holiday. It also helps if you know the language so that they cannot rip you off. Yes they can try but they don't quite succeed....

Thanks every one for your advice.....looks like we are stuck in the Sofitel after all.

Problem is we are arriving late in the evening into Athens airport with a 7am next morning to Thira.....the missus and I really dont want to taxi it into and back from Athens.

Seems the price for the convienience will be about 350 Aussie dollars!

Bugger!

Thanks again

Josko :(

Depending on what time the train starts running (and whether you can face the travel), you could get a cheap hotel as close as possible to one of the central Athens stations on the line serving the airport. From memory, someone told me there are heaps of hotels near, um, Syntagma(?) station or something like that.
