Hi All,

I am after recommendations for a 'hopefully' red wine up to the limit of approx $300. (Getting a good deal on a more expensive wine is a bonus!!)

So what is a hopefully wine?

At a previous workplace I was working closely with a colleague and we had a habit of saying 'hopefully xyz will happen'. We decided that rather than hope the event\action would happen we would try and ensure it did happen. If either of us said the word hopefully, we had to put money in to a jar (just like a swear jar). It was decided that the money in the jar would be counted when one of us left the company and it was to be used to purchase an expensive bottle (or bottles) of wine that we would not normally buy. When we were on our third jar, my colleague left and upon counting the money we have over $550. This money was spent on:
  • 2012 Kilikanoon Kelly 1932 Grenache
  • 2014 Jim Barry The Armagh and
  • 2014 Kilikanoon Attunga 1865 Shiraz
Every 6 months we had a 'hopefully wine' and a 'hopefully' dinner. Since then, this tradition has continued with us taking turn purchasing the wine. Other hopefully wines have included:
  • 2014 Yalumba The Caley Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2016 Pertaringa Tipsy Hill Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon
  • 2013 Henschke Mount Edlestone
  • 2016 Greenock Creek Roennfeldt Road Cabernet Sauvignon
This time it is my turn to purchase and I would love some ideas.

Thanks in advance!

Some Aussie wines in that range that come to mind would be:

RunRig
Old cough
Maurice O'Shea
Graveyard
Clos Otto

Cheers for the pointers - a mate also recommended Maurice O'Shea. ill do some googling on them!

Other requirements are the wine is to be Australian and that it is good to drink now and doesnt need aging.

I would not have been drinking the 2016 Greenock Creek Roennfeldt Road cabernet sauuvignon as a drink now wine.

for anyone playing along at home, i pulled the trigger on a 2018 Maurice O'Shea :)
Sorry I missed this thread, great story and the O'Shea is a fantastic wine.

Looks like there is a strong trend towards cabs/shiraz?

I would add for your future hopefully wines:
- Hentley Farm Clos Otto
- Torbreck RunRig
- Bass Philip Premium (tbh this would have been cool to change up from the current list of wines)
- Vertical of something like Mount Mary or Cullen - though maybe too much for just the two of you?
