Trying to get some advice here. In May 2011 we are due into HKG 9.55pm & leave 7.35am next morning (mid week). Couple only, no loyalty program benefits built up. Currently I am thinking either Regal, Novotel or Marriott at the airport- should I look further afield? At the moment price seems to be (cheap to high) Marriott, Novotel, Regal with the hotel web sites looking the best value. Am I missing coupon/code discounts etc? From what I have seen the current wotif prices don't seem to be any better than what I can currently get on hotel websites.
Should I jump in now & book the Marriott?-shuttle looks like it will be Ok for our hours or just a cheap taxi if shuttle is too busy.

Novotel or Marriott are both OK if you can get them relatively cheap.

I don't mind going a little further and I have stayed at the Oriental Lander and Dorsett Kowloon for ~AUD60/night. Use in town check-in early in the morning and head off to the airport.

The Regal is the closest, given the short turnaround I would go for it if the budget allows at 1200 HKG on average. I have stayed there and it was a blessing to be off the plane and in the room in 20 minutes.

Dorsett Kowloon is excellent value but the beds in the standard rooms are hilarious - way too short and hard as a board.

That said I would stay their again purely to save a buck:p

I stayed a night in similar circumstances to yours last year at the Novotel Citygate.

The hotel was fine (and competitively priced with the other close-to-the-airport hotels IIRC, otherwise I would not have stayed there :) ), but regarding the free shuttle - I had to wait a good 20 mins for it (it says 'every 15 mins') at the airport, and I note it does not re-commence running again until 0600 which may be too late for your departure. Guess a taxi would be no issue, but just add a bit to the cost.

My family stayed at the Marriott Skycity last month due to late arrival and early departure like yourself. We did have a couple of days in between but one of them was at Disneyland so it made sense to locate ourselves close to the airport.

The shuttles were efficient and always on time, and the hotel was fine apart from the lack of free internet and breakfast, but I would imagine you require neither of these things.

Funnily enough Qantas Holidays offered the best deal, so do check them against the hotel site. I think it was $148 per night for the four of us (double-double).

We found it quite OK. We only needed the room for an afternoon but they let us check-in before midday. I was able to sleep OK and the staff were great in helping my father find a place to get coffee. Left hotel at ~8:00pm to get back to airport.

I have noticed that prices have been creeping upwards recently. :(

If not at the airport stay close to Kowloon station. I stayed at the Pacific, and for $107AUD it was just fine. 33 Canton Rd TST. it's on the bus route after the Train. Last drop off however last pick up as well.

I booked through AGODA, which seem to have good pricing for Asia.

(5 min walk through Kowloon Park you are right in the middle of TST - most convenient)

Yes the QF website has it around the same price as the website ( Marriott), but with points.

We are helped by a great FX at present.

The price order of hotels that you have is the same order that I have always found them anytime I have checked. I therefore stayed at Marriott as it was the least expensive. Very comfortable for a short stopover. I took the shuttle one way and wouldn't bother again, I paid a taxi back to the airport the following morning. The taxis are cheap and you can leave when you want to, without having to wait for a shuttle. I didn't wait that long at the airport, only about 10 min for the shuttle, but there were about 9 other people on it, and I was at the end of that queue of people at the desk to check in. For a AUD$3 taxi fare I could have been at the hotel a lot quicker and beaten the check in queue.

Stayed at Novotel last December. Easy access via shuttle, very very nice hotel, great food options, comfy and modern. Highly recommend. Just check the return shuttle times as mentioned.

Thanks for the replies so far. Marriott has the advantage over Novotel of early shuttle from 5am if it is as advertised. Working on 7.5 to the dollar as ballpark, best I have seen is Marriott around $157 Aust.
Qantas is showing $222 Aust currently for Regal on May 3rd, Regals own site is 1322 HKG with taxes in and Marriott's own site is 1221 HKG with taxes.
So at the moment the extra $13 Aust or so for the Regal looks good value for the time saved on arrival & departure.:)

Wow! That room rate for the Marriott is relatively expensive.

I would rather stay in the airport for 4-5 hours than pay that much money for 5-6 hours sleep.

I know it is out of your allocated budget for this trip - but the W Hong Kong is another (more pricey) option for a future quick stay. Right on top of the Kowloon airport express station so is extremely quick and easy to get to.

I have stayed at Novotel Citigate at least 4 times and the Marriott once. I would not hesitate to use either again. I have not used the Regal as it has always been considerably more expensive, though would save between 15 and 30 mins transit time (wait for shuttle and shuttle trip to other hotels).

For the timing you note I would not be staying anywhere other than the three airport hotels. The cost and time to get to/from Kowloon just is not warranted in my experience unless you plan on partying all night rather than sleeping.
