Hi. Would really appreciate some advice from anyone familiar with Hong Kong airport. Was lucky enough to score some QFF award flights from Rome to Sydney on Cathay metal in June. Only problem is 12-hr gap between flight arriving in HK (0630) and then leaving for Sydney (approx 1830). Can't see any transit hotel option as they have in Singapore, only normal hotels where it will presumably be difficult to check in so early. Even the lounge may may lose its appeal after 12hrs. Is day trip to HK feasible? Or any other airport options? Thanks.

12 hours is ample time for a day trip

Totally agree. Would not stay at HKG airport for that time period. Catch the Airport express to Kowloon and use in-town check-in to ditch luggage if it's not checked through and head off for some eating and shopping.

Have a look at this thread where a similar question was asked, but with a shorter time.

There is an arrival lounge where you could freshen up if you are travelling J or have status on QF. If you take the very efficient and regular airport train, at either Kowloon or Central stations you can then take a free bus to a number of hotels where you might get a day rate if you really need a hotel room.

There is no end of things you can do in a day in HKG :)

There is a hotel at the airport, but it's landside so you need to clear customs/immigration to get to it. It's also expensive for food, beverage and accommodation.

As mannej noted, 12 hours is ample time for a day trip. If you need to you can leave luggage in a luggage storage place (just after customs, and reasonably priced). Catch the train from the airport into Hong Kong (approx 30 mins) and spend the day sightseeing.
