Holy cow, Lion Air off the runway again

Probably an unfortunate coincidence that it happened to Lion Air:

AN Indonesian passenger jet crashed into a cow and skidded off the runway as it came into land at an airport in the centre of the archipelago, officials say.
No-one was killed or seriously injured when the Lion Air plane carrying 110 passengers collided with one of three cows wandering on the runway as it arrived late on Tuesday in Gorontalo, on Sulawesi island.
The cow, however, was crushed to death under one of the Boeing 737-900's middle wheels, head of Jalaluddin airport Agus Pramuka told AFP on Wednesday.
The pilot, Iwan Permadi, told state-run Antara news agency he could smell "burning meat" as the jet ran over the animal.
He said he thought there were dogs in front of the plane as it came into land, "but it turned out there were three cows wandering in the middle of the runway".

Yes, even if ATC is present (dont think they were in this case) and clear the aircraft to land, responsibility always lies with the pilot to ensure the runway is clear and its safe to land.

Which, in my estimation, means it's a less than a "coincidence" that it's Lion Air.

The accident investigation report on this one should make good reading.....

The regional airport & airline standards in Indonesia are what I would classify as extremely lax, even on a good day.

I have had a few go around's in the Torres Straits & Gulf areas of Queensland due to dogs on the runway.

The best one ever was a crocodile on the airstrip and we did a few laps until they worked out how to get that bad boy off the runway... It was funny after the event and was the talking point for quite some time.. The croc farm was only down the road from the airstrip so he got a new home.

Surely cows running around airports is another reason to not fly around secondary regions in the Developing World!

Aircraft landed during the night, going to be hard to spot cow at 1500-2000ft at 3-5nm out even at the MDA it would be pretty hard depending on the lighting circumstances of the airport...
