The last couple of times i've stayed I thought the place was getting a bit old and run down, this may explain it:

Dear M. eric2011,
Re: Confirmation No. 27****30
As one of our valued IHG Reward Club members, we are writing you regarding your upcoming reservation for the Holiday Inn Old Sydney. We wanted to take the time to inform you that the hotel is leaving the IHG family of hotels effective on January 14, 2020. They are going to be Rydges Sydney Harbour. I would like to apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause you.
The hotel has assured us they will still be able to honor your reservation. Unfortunately, they will be unable to offer IHG Reward Club benefits, points, or credit for the stay. If you have any questions or would like to cancel your reservation, you may contact the hotel directly. The phone number for the hotel is 61 2 925 51800. If you prefer to stay with another IHG property where you can enjoy all the benefits of the IHG Rewards Club program, we invite you to visit our website to book alternate accommodations at www.ihg.com.
As an IHG Rewards Club Spire Ambassador member, we realize you have many choices when it comes to your travel needs. We greatly appreciate your understanding in this matter and thank you for your patronage. We look forward to the opportunity to host you as our guest at another IHG property in the near future.
Sincerely,

Ether B.
Case Manager

Disappointing to only get one month's notice. Perhaps they can move you to the Sofitel with the same rate - and throw in breakfast for the inconvenience.

Would be nice but can’t see them moving me to another chain

Intercon maybe. but even that;s a stretch ;)

Well at least it was a cash booking. If it was made using points it probably would have been cancelled.
