Upon check-in the staff welcomed me warmly and thanked me for being their member (even though I'm at the lowest tier and this was my first stay in the brand). It was 11am (3 hours prior to where rooms are typically available) and my room was already available.

The room was on the 5th floor and it was close to the lift (although in my preferences I've stated to have a room away from the lifts but that doesn't matter). The room is nice and cool and a welcome message was displayed on the TV, which was already turned on before I came in.

The room has a nice little working desk with adequate power outlet and USB charging ports, both next to both sides of the bed and the work station.

A minibar was also filled with coffee sachets, sugar packets and tea bags. A fridge is located underneath it and it was stocked with milk (capsules).

On the bed, there are 2 choices of pillows: soft and firm. I personally prefer the soft ones. The bed was also comfortable and I could fall asleep very easily.

To my knowledge, there is no room service available but you can fill your containers with water at every time; as well as various beverages and food from breakfast when its being served. Breakfast is complementary for everyone and it starts from 6:30 - 9:30 daily. Breakfast food was basic, but adequate. You'll find scrambled eggs, sausages, yogurt, pastries, toast, bacon etc. as well as coffee and juice.

Toothbrush and toothpastes will be provided on request due to environmental concerns. Also, if you're staying 2 or more nights, you can opt to deny room service (you'll have to hang a specific sign at the door) and you'll be awarded up to 500 IHG reward points.

I quite like the hotel, having stayed there now twice (and two more rounds coming by the end of the year). Being a recent build, the rooms are practical and clean. Though, the bathroom design does not give the maximum privacy you or some people might desire if you're traveling with someone. The breakfast I find pretty versatile: you can find several items of hot and cold, fruity or toasty varieties. For an affordable hotel, this one works well.

Holiday Inn Express Newcastle (NSW) is made with the same cookie cutter, though they could improve the ventilation in the rooms.

I do agree with the privacy of the bathroom. It’s quite revealing and I won’t feel safe if I’m sharing the room with someone else

the Bathroom is the only downside for me, Glass walls don't work IMHO and the slightest amount of light emitting from any nocturnal visit by Mrs GPH wakes me up. otherwise i am very happy with the offering and use them frequently for those overnight visits to the CBD

Have you ever come across the electronic 'gray-out' glass? Novotel in London had them, push button from clear to opaque. Now if you are sharing a room fitted with these, you are going to be really nervous!

In that case I would shower with my clothes on 🤣

Currently sitting in the breakfast lounge and watching with interest as a woman fills up the take away containers. I noticed them for the first time today, and they are quite large. So far she has taken 4 full containers of bacon, 4 of scrambled eggs, 4 of pastries, 4 of pancakes with all the trimmings, over 4 separate trips to the elevator.

I hope I’m here long enough to see what she takes next trip.

A bit pathetic with the rooms at around only $ 110 per night inc breakfast.

NB. HIX is our 2nd home atm as it’s so close to Wickham Terrace specialists. Mostly stay Sunday nights to avoid Monday morning traffic from the ‘burgs and it’s been great so far. I earned 35,000 IHG points on a recent stay! Winning!

That lady must be having a feast in her room and she's enjoying the food!
Wow mate 35000 points that's a lot. I hope you're enjoying your stay

And I feel guilty if I take a piece of fruit to go!

Oh my. This woman is in a room close to the elevator. As I was arriving she was closing her room door and snarling at someone (or something) to “stay there”!
Possibly headed back to the buffet for another haul. Seems pretty determined.

Edit: the something was a dog. It was outside with her while she had a smoke.

Talk about taking this thread off-piste ⛷🏂 Sorry about that @kurtislee09 🤪

Too right. The greed of some people astounds me sometimes! How can hotels keep the costs down when guests are swiping everything that isn't nailed down!

Usually we just have a coffee and pastry, as most days I finish early enough to have lunch with @GPH on the way home. “Julius Pizzeria in Grey Street ” beckons today.

At the Waldorf Edinburgh, they would give us a take away pack and encourage us to fill it and take away. Hubby would grab fruit instead of pastries.

There's a bar we loved in the city that had those. Gosh it takes a long time to 'let go' when you can see everyone milling around outside!

NB. We had glass bathroom walls with big gaps under the loo doors at Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast. That sure took the romance out of the evening, when @GPH suffered from the "Salmonella Sideboard" (Seafood Buffet) on my birthday! We've never been back!

What did that Creature from the Black Lagoon do to your hubby? 😉
