HNL hotels

Hi there

Does anyone have any recomendations for hotels in the HNL airport area (not Downtown or Waikiki), i haven't been to HNL since i was a kid (1978).

Price range USD 100-150, just need it for a couple overnight connections.

I don't believe there are any all that close to the airport (I've looked for my own use recently).

I think you'd be better off going into Waikiki (it's only a few K's further anyway), where you will have a huge range of possibilities.

You could try the "Best Western Plaza Hotel" which is about 1/2 a mile from the airport or the "Honolulu Airport Hotel" which is apparently a cpl of miles from the airport.

Never stayed in either. Sure I passed them both when recently at HNL and believe they are both on the main road (North Nimitz Highway) outside the airport.

A taxi from HNL- Waikiki would be around $US35-$40 (incl. tip and tip for "porter" at the taxi rank). Shuttle bus is around $US9.

Not sure I would want to walk around the airport area after dark, although the hotels close by could have shuttle busses (don't know for sure).

As I indicated, the closest hotels are quite a way from the airport (eg Best Western Plaza Hotel @ 2.46 Km from HNL).

Mal is quite correct in saying that this area is not one of the nicest.

If I were you I'd be getting the shuttle bus (or even the public bus at $2 a trip) into Waikiki.

That's what I'll be doing in January (and what I did when I visited last year). Very simple really.

I stayed at the Airport Hotel about 5 years back (had to overnight on the way to Maui) and the only thing going for it was the proximity. It wasn't cheap, the rooms were dingy, and even the breakfast lacked style and taste.

At least if you go into Waikiki you can leave your room and get some dinner in town, and depending upon departure time you may even enjoy a nice morning near the beach.

Maybe Qantas Holidays can do a good rate (incl. transfers) for the two overnights.

I was in HNL in July and I agree with the others about the seediness of the area near the airport. I can really recommend the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani (about A$106 pp per night) at 120 Kaiulani St (cnr of Kalakaua) Honolulu which is in Waikiki. If you do stay there, go into the International Marketplace and go to Coconut Willy's one night and say hello to Kevin Mau for me. You'll have a good time at Coconut Willy's.

I am travelling MEL-HNL-(LAX)-LHR and return, and have a 24 hr connection from JQ to AA in HNL on the way over, and a 2.5 day connection on the way back, I have some $19 flights booked to Maui & Hawaii on the way back for a change of scenery.

Maui is beautiful. Rent a car and drive up the 10 023 feet Haleakala volcano or drive to Wailea in South Maui. I liked the accommodation at Ka'anapali. To me, Maui is far preferable to Oahu. I hope that you have a good time, DJ737.

On our way back from Maui to Sydney a couple of years ago, we had several hours to kill in Honolulu. We arrived at about 4pm, QF check-in didn't open until 8pm. There is NOTHING to do at the airport outside of security, and you can't get past security unless you have a boarding pass (we later discovered there wasn't much to do on the other side of security either...).

We ended up catching a shuttle bus to Waikiki (bags and all - this was before I knew about interlining baggage..). The Waikiki hotel we stayed at a couple of weeks before was kind enough to look after our bags for a few hours. It was a decent enough hotel - one of the Ohana chain on Saratoga Rd. I believe it is now closed - Donald Trump bought the whole block and is redeveloping it.

The taxi trip back to the airport cost about $35 from memory.

Maui was OK - we stayed in Ka'anapali too. I prefer our local beaches to any we saw on Maui. We did drive all the way around the island via Hana - won't be doing that again! It is a rather bad road on the far side of Hana.

But overall, we liked the Big Island the most - the Volcano National Park is amazing.

Hi everyone

We stayed for an overnight at the Ocean Resort Hotel in Waikiki - partail ocean view room, and it came to AUD135 for the room. The hotel was fine - close to the beach. The rooms clean but not spectacular. We took the shuttle bus from the airport - USD13 return per person.

We were going to stay close to the airport but checked out the hotels on tripadvisor.com and quickly changed our minds.

For a cheap but ok stay - recommend the above. 3 minute walk to the beach and all the eateries. Coffee is available in the hotel lobby in the morning for USD1 per cup - no facilities in the room itself.
