Hiton South Wharf and ethical employment of staff

This site seems to have a lot of bias against Hilton, while it goes under the banner of melbournes luxury hotels there is only a brief mention of the Langham, Hyatt as also being an issue?

This is a union owned website - did you expect anything better?

Why go after the Hilton though, saying its a union site does not answer that question, especially since they seem to have had the most action at the Hilton on the Park but south wharf is the campaign leader? I note there is no list of hotels that have signed their charter, only the campaign to get South Wharfs GM to do so?

I think it's typical MO of most Vic unions (dare say AU unions) that they try and publicly name & shame a particular business in the hope of bully boy tactic their policy in this case charter (a fancy word for an EBA methinks) - making it seem many more companies in the same or similar industry are already part of it...

I have been involved one layer away from executive management where the ETU tried the same draconian tactic (and failed after 11 weeks of strike action) and the only people whom benefited in any way shape or form, were the union officials - who still got paid their salary...

Sorry but I doubt you will find any hotel that is any different.
There was something in the local press a few years ago about Hyatt Coolum in similiar vein.I knew a woman who worked there-her opinion was those complaining were disorganised and so took longer than necessary to do a room.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yeah, I guess you're all right.

I know it's an LHMU website and I've adjusted the exaggeration meter accordingly, but I just really don't like the thought of all the hard-working cleaning staff being required to do hours of unpaid overtime. It's not as though they're paid well enough to make up for it, either!

I wish it wasn't the case that all hotels were like this. Maybe there are some that aren't? I would prefer to give them my business if possible.

Well, thanks everyone for humouring my little crisis of conscience!

There is a Hilton South Wharf staff member who regularly contributes on FlyerTalk (SWInsider). Might be interesting to see what he/she has to say.

Maybe I need to stay in more Melbourne hotels, I rarely get my room serviced if staying less than three days, if I am on my own I see no need, as usually there is plenty of towels etc for one. Its interesting the excuses they come up with after the second day to make sure you dont want a service!

I may be going against the trend here but I am not going to change my decision making process of which hotel I stay because the staff have issues with management. Should it be my problem? Should I be worried? I have way more than I can cope with at the moment.

I can safely say (well almost*) the same thing about all the goods and services I purchase.

* N.B Call me a hypocrite but there are certain things I feel very strongly about and refuse to give these people/countries any of my hard earned cash....

This statement is nothing more than an irrelevant announcement of your prejudices.

"Youthinks" (with no need to consider any pesky facts) that it's all "bully boy and draconian tactics." Would you care to explain just how a campaign which aims to improve the conditions of some of the lowest paid and most disadvantaged workers in the workforce can seriously be described as "Draconian"?

Do you actually know the first thing about the conditions under which hotel room attendants work?

I don't know anything about this stuff so complete ignorance is me. However, I would have thought that in Australia there were enforceable minimum conditions in practically any workplace be it high flying or more humble.

If employees at these hotels are being abused wouldn't there be a legal case that the respective unions could bring? ... and win?

If the answer is that the campaign is trying to raise minimum employment standards across the board, which is fine, I can't see how this goal is likely to profit by targeting a selection of commercial interests.... surely lobbying government would be the most logical course of action?

so does this sound a little off-
Hotel staff fed up with Valentine's stains
"For us, Valentine's Day means flower petals scattered all over the floors, spilt champagne everywhere and some very questionable stains all over the beds, but no extra time to clean," said one Hilton Hotel room attendant.
"We see exotic fruits and chocolates ground into the carpets, bubble bath all over the bathroom and massage oils all over the bed. And don't even ask me about the whipped cream," she said in a statement.

The Liquor, Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union has planned a protest outside the Hilton South Wharf Hotel, where they will be handing out cleaning wipes and asking for a hand.
